NEW YORK-The New York State Conference of Bar Leaders (NYSCBL) has announced the winners of its 2002 Awards of Merit for local bar associations and will honor the recipients during the New York State Bar Association’s (NYSBA) 126th Annual Meeting. "I am always impressed by the commitment, creativity, hard work and dedication demonstrated by all of the nominees in offering such extensive public service programs on a volunteer basis," said Deborah L. Kelly of Albany (Hodgson Russ LLP), chair of the NYSCBL. For the small bar association category (fewer than 500 members), an Award of Merit will be given to the Oneida County Bar Association for its project, “The Lawyers and Judges in the Classroom.” The project was created to expose students from elementary through high school to the workings of the judicial system to provide them with opportunity for direct contact and interaction with attorneys and judges. In the medium bar association category (500-1,999 members), the Federal Bar Council will receive the award for its pro bono legal work for families of World Trade Center victims. The program aided 130 families of uniformed personnel killed in the 9/11 attacks by providing legal support for issues, such as obtaining death certificates, estate administration, and domestic partnerships. The third Award of Merit, for larger bar associations (more than 2,000 members), will be given to the Monroe County Bar Association and the Greater Rochester Association for Women Attorneys. These two associations worked together to develop and implement the “Wills Project.” For this program, attorneys, paralegals and support staff volunteered to prepare wills, powers of attorney and health care proxies for more than 270 Army, Navy, and Marine Corps reservists and their spouses. Formed in 1979, the NYSCBL provides a forum for the exchange of information among local bar leaders, as well as between the NYSBA and bar leaders.
Originally developed by the NYSBA’s Committee on Lawyers and the Community, the Awards of Merit recognize professional and public service programs sponsored by the local, ethnic, specialty, minority, and women’s bar associations in New York State
