ALBANY – The New York State Bar Association is accepting nominations for its 2005 Award for Excellence in Public Service, which recognizes exceptional commitment in the performance of public service by a member of the legal profession.

“There are relatively few honors for attorneys in the public sector; this award is an important opportunity to recognize the significant contributions we make as individuals and as members of the organized bar,” said James F. Horan of Troy (NYS Health Department), chair of the Committee on Attorneys in Public Service, which sponsors the award.

All lawyers active in government service, or a related public service, are eligible for nomination. Nominations may recognize either individual service or the collective work of a team of lawyers. Either service given during 2004 or service rendered throughout a career are eligible for recognition.

Entries must be received no later than Friday, October 1, 2004, and should be addressed to Patricia K. Wood, staff liaison, Committee on Attorneys in Public Service, One Elk St., Albany, NY 12207. They may also be faxed to 518-487-5579. Further information is available online at www.nysba.org/caps.

Submissions should include the nominee’s name, period of public service, departments or agencies that the nominee has worked for, and is currently employed with, why the nominee should be considered for this award, and the name and contact information of the person making the nomination.

The award will be presented on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 during the NYSBA’s Annual Meeting in Manhattan.

Past recipients of the Award for Excellence in Public Service are: 2004 - Jeffrey Friedlander and Leonard Koerner, City of New York Law Department; 2003 - The Office of the Attorney General, under the direction of Hon. Eliot Spitzer; 2002 - Patricia Salkin, Albany Law School and Archibald Murray (posthumously) Legal Aid Society of New York City; 2001 - Robert Morgenthau, New York County District Attorney; and 2000 - Hon. Joseph Bellacosa, Associate Judge, New York State Court of Appeals.
