ALBANY - At its most recent meeting, the board of directors of The New York Bar Foundation awarded $331,550 in grants to nonprofit and other organizations across New York state to help fund 30 law-related programs. Recipients include: · Albany Capital District National Court Appointed Special Advocate Association (CASA) for the Rensselaer County Court Appointed Special Assistant Program, and the New York State Defenders Association Inc. · Bath - Southern Tier Legal Services · Bronx - Civil Action Project of the Bronx Defenders · Brooklyn - Brooklyn Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project Inc. · Corning - National Court Appointed Special Advocate Association (CASA) of the Southern Tier Inc. · Jamestown - Robert H. Jackson Center · New York - The Association of the Bar of the City of New York for its Legal Hotline, Brennan Center for Justice, Court Appointed Special Advocates Inc., The Fund for Modern Courts, Human Rights First, Legal Services for Children Inc., Legal Services for New York City, MFY Legal Services, New York Lawyers for the Public Interest Inc., The Partnership for the Homeless, and Pro Bono Net Inc. · Poughkeepsie - Dutchess County Bar Association for its Law Day Legal Free Clinic · Rochester - Monroe County Bar Center for Education (Monroe County Bar Association) for its Minority Law Clerk Program · Utica - Family Nurturing Center of Central New York Inc. · White Plains – The Historical Society of the Courts of the State of New York, and Legal Services of the Hudson Valley The grants continue The Foundation’s tradition of supporting charitable and educational projects to meet the law-related needs of the public and the legal profession. These grants cover a variety of programs throughout the state that impact parents, students, teachers, senior citizens, young children and pro bono attorneys. The grants will also provide funding for law-related programs that will help adolescents in foster care, mentally ill persons, the disabled, victims of domestic violence, low-income persons and the homeless. Foundation President Robert L. Haig of New York (Kelley Drye &Warren LLP) stated that, “The New York Bar Foundation is pleased to support these programs, conducted by legal services organizations, bar associations and law centers, which are benefiting from grants that are the result of generous philanthropic giving to The Foundation by lawyers, law firms, corporations and others.” The board of directors will review additional grant proposals at its June 23 meeting. The deadline for grant applications, to be considered in June, is April 1, 2006. Application forms can be accessed by visiting The Foundation’s Web site at www.tnybf.org.
