Corporate Counsel

Corporate Counsel Section

 Welcome

The Corporate Counsel Section of the New York State Bar Association is comprised of more than 1,600 attorneys who serve as in-house counsel to corporations and other business entities, as well as attorneys in law firms, government, and academic institutions. The Section members collaborate on activities that enhance the role of in-house corporate counsel as contributing members and leaders of their communities, the legal profession and the Bar Association, and provide a medium for cooperation, encouragement and assistance in the resolution of problems common to them and the legal profession, to their mutual benefit and the benefit of the membership of the Bar Association, the legal profession at large, the substantive body of law in New York, and the general administration of justice throughout the state.

Mentor/Mentee Program for Corporate Counsel Section

Now is your chance to mentor an exceptional young lawyer.

Every year, the Corporate Counsel Section’s Kenneth G. Standard Diversity Internship Program places several law students with diverse backgrounds in in-house summer internships, including internships with AllianceBernstein, Pepsi, and Con Edison, among others, in 2012. Interns are selected through a competitive process from law schools across New York State. The success of this program is one of the Section’s achievements.

The Section is currently seeking mentors for up to 30 recent alumni from the Kenneth G. Standard Diversity Internship Program. You can be at a firm, in-house or in government; you can live or practice anywhere in NY state; and you can have any level of experience and background.   You just have to be willing to share a little time, knowledge and perspective with a new lawyer.

This commitment will not be time consuming – maybe only an hour or two per month. However, in one hour per month, a mentor can make a disproportionate impact on a young career.

If interested, kindly complete the questionnaire and return it by email or fax to Patricia Johnson at pjohnson@nysba.org, phone or fax 518.487.5688. You will be contacted with detailed information.

Corporate Counsel Pro Bono Report

David Rothenberg presented the CCS report on a proposed amendment to the rules concerning the practice of pro bono services by NY registered in-house counsel licensed in other states to the NYSBA House of Delegates and the NYSBA Executive Committee which approved the report June 2012. See here for the HOD presentation.

Individuals or firms may download this form to support the proposal to amend the Court of Appeals rules concerning the admission of attorneys to authorize NY registered in-house counsel to provide pro bono services in NY although licensed in other states. You may return the form to Pat Johnson at pjohnson@nysba.org or by fax to 518.487.5758.
