WELCOME!

It is my honor as chair of the Environmental Law Section of the New York State Bar Association to welcome you to the Section’s website.  As our Section is dedicated to Environmental Law and environmentalism, we will do our best to reduce the use of paper, energy, and other resources by making full use of this website to communicate with you. I hope you will check this site regularly and interact with us using this site.

The Section’s Annual Meeting was held on January 25, at the Hilton New York in Manhattan. In addition, on Thursday, January 24, we again offered an EPA Update concerning recent major undertakings, rules and developments in Region 2, and at Headquarters. Following the Update we hosted our annual cocktail reception and the annual business meeting.

I also want to call your attention to a Questionnaire the Section’s Pollution Prevention Committee and I developed. In an effort to focus our attention on the carbon footprint each of us has, I ask that you complete the Questionnaire: www.nysba.org/ELSQuestionnaire

Our Section is an active one on many fronts. Each year we host Fall and Winter meetings as well as a Legislative Forum in Albany in the Spring (environmental enforcement was the topic of the most recent gathering).  Our many active committees host numerous CLE seminars (including webinars, another way to reduce our collective carbon footprint and save time, energy and other resources) throughout the State. Members in our Section receive the New York Environmental Lawyer journal and have the option of receiving it electronically, again to save paper and other resources.

The Environmental Law Section is proud of its long-standing policy on diversity and its on-going attempts to welcome any and all into the Section. Environmental issues affect us all individually and relate to a great many of the issues that we all deal with professionally. We are entering our thirty-fourth year as a Section with a membership of approximately 1,000 lawyers representing a myriad of clients and covering the entire State. If you have an interest or issue you would like to raise with us, please feel free to do so, and we would welcome you as a new member of the Section should you wish to join. As noted, we have numerous active committees and you are welcome to join any of them.

Greening the NY Legal Profession

The Environmental Law Section has launched an initiative to green the legal profession in New York State.  Since lawyers have made such a big contribution to paperwork, hopefully we can lead the way to reducing it, and making the legal industry more environmentally friendly.  As a Section, we have continued to use conference calls and web-based tools to put on programs, and to reduce paper materials for meetings and CLEs by using CDs.  Not only does this save on our carbon footprint, but it enables members of our Section to attend programs for a smaller investment of time and money.  Led by our Pollution Prevention Committee Co-Chairs Megan Brillault and Kristen Wilson, our plans include encouraging New York law offices to enroll in the ABA-EPL Law Office Climate Challenge, and greening the State Bar Association through the strategies our Section has already launched.  We  also want to encourage changes to the state court system, including electronic filing, as proposed in Green Justice: An Environmental Action Plan for the New York State Court System, a 2008 report issued by Judge Kaye.  Please let us know if you have ideas or would like to help.

Invitation to Join a Section Committee

Are you interested in getting more involved in the Environmental Law Section?  If so, joining one of our committees is a great opportunity.  For more information, if you are logged in as an NYSBA member, then you can find the names and contact information for the Committee chairs in the Committee Rosters link in the left column of this page.  If you are not logged in, you can contact the member of the Section Cabinet designated as liaison for the committee in the chart below.  We look forward to hearing from you.
