THE ASSOCIATION'S ADVOCACY EFFORTS WITH RESPECT TO FEDERAL BUDGET SEQUESTRATION

  • Read President James' op-ed urging congress to act to protect funding for federal courts and civil legal services through the Legal Services Corporation, which was published in the New York Law Journal on September 26, 2012. 

 

  • In addition to President James' op-ed in the New York Law Journal, he sent an October 9, 2012 letter to the New York Congressional delegation urging them to protect funding for the courts and the Legal Services Corporation.  The Association's Committee on Federal Legislative Priorities, led by President James and President-Elect Schraver is also planning a late fall trip to Washington, D.C. to urge positive action on these issues. 

 

  • On November 20, 2012, President Seymour James sent a  letter co-signed by 15 local bar presidents from across the state again urging the New York Congressional delegation to protect funding for the courts and the Legal Services Corporation. 

 

  • On November 28, 2012, President Seymour James and President-Elect David Schraver, along with Mark Alcott (past President and Chair of the New York delegation to the ABA), Alan Rothstein, Sandra Rivera, and Tracee Davis (memebrs of the Committee on Federal Legislative Priorities) met with over twenty members of Congress to emphasize the importance of Congress acting to protect funding for the federal Judiciary and the Legal Services Corporation.  Follow this link to read the press release.
