Leona Beane serves as an arbitrator and mediator for several
different forums, is a mediator in the Commercial Division of the
Supreme Court; U.S. District Court,(Southern & Eastern Districts);
Bankruptcy Courts (Southern & Eastern Districts); Mediator-Special
Master in the Appellate Division First Department; U.S. Equal
Employment Opportunity Commission; N.J. Superior Court, mediating many
different types of cases including corporate and partnership disputes;
contracts; business litigation; employment disputes; personal injury;
real estate, wills, trusts and probate, and many other types of
disputes. She serves as a mediator and arbitrator for Part 137 Attorney
Fee Disputes in the First Department; also as an arbitrator for FINRA
Dispute Resolution, National Futures Association and several additional
organizations. She is a New York State Certified Mediator for Safe
Horizon.
She is a mediator certified by the N.C. Dispute Resolution Commission
to mediate cases in their Superior Court Civil Division (Civil cases and
Probate/Guardianship)..
Leona was a Tenured Professor of Law for 21 years at Baruch College
(C.U.N.Y.), teaching and writing in the areas of contracts, partnerships
and corporations, is currently Professor Emeritus and a practicing
attorney, mediator and arbitrator. Her legal practice emphasizes the
areas of probate, wills, trusts, estates and guardianship matters. She
had extensively lectured and published articles relating to Guardianship
including, "Should Mediation Be Available as an Option to Reduce
Litigation in Contested Guardianship Cases?" (NYSBA, June 2002);
"Incorporating Mediation Within the Guardians’ Powers" (NYSBA
Elder Law, Fall 2008). She is on the Board of Directors of the NY
Women's Bar Association, is co-chair of their Trusts & Estates
Committee, and is Chair of their ADR Committee; she also served as Chair
of the Trusts & Estates Committee of the state wide Women’s
Bar Association (WBASNY).
She is a member of the Trusts & Estates, Elder Law, Business Law,
and Commercial & Federal Litigation and Dispute Resolution Sections
of the NYSBA. She served for 2 years as Vice Chair and is
currently website Chair of the Dispute Resolution Section of the NYSBA,
and has served on its Executive Committee for 5 years.
Leona has completed extensive mediation trainings (over 300 hours
with several different providers including Decision Tree Analysis). She
has mediated 300 disputes of all types. She served as Chair of the ADR
Committee at New York County Lawyers Association for four years. She has
chaired and co-chaired several CLE programs relating to ADR, including
Ethics in ADR, Mediation Advocacy Skills, Beyond Impasse, and
others. Last year, she Co-Chaired the very successful
“Basics of Trusts & Estates Medation”. Some recent
writings include: “What is Mediation and How Does It Work?”
(N.Y.L.J., October 29, 2007, pg. 4); "Utilizing Mediation to Resolve
Estate Litigation" (NYSBA Trusts and Estate Law, Fall 2008, pg. 7);
"What Is the Extent of Confidentiality in Mediation After Hauzinger?"
(NYSBA Dispute Resolution Lawyer, Fall 2008, p. 26); "Mediation and
Estate Litigation" (NYSBA Disp. Resl. L. 2009, pg. 62). She is the
author of Chapter 26, on "Mediation" in the New York Lawyers
Deskbook (NYSBA).
She was inducted as a Charter Member of the NY Academy of Mediators
and Arbitrators, a Chapter of the National Academy of Distinguished
Neutrals.
