FORMER JUDGE GEORGE MARLOW RECEIVES FRANKLIN P. GAVIN
AWARD
George D. Marlow of Poughkeepsie, retired associate justice of the
Appellate Division, First Department, is the recipient of the Franklin
P. Gavin Award, presented by the New York State Bar Association Lawyer
Assistance Committee.
Judge Marlow helped create the Lawyer Assistance Committee in
Dutchess County. He has sponsored and chaired continuing legal education
programs on the impact of lawyer alcoholism, addiction and mental
illness.
He served on the Judge Advisory Panel for the Lawyer Assistance
Trust. He has been a vocal proponent of creating a system where lawyers
can recover from destructive conditions such as alcoholism and drug
abuse, and become and remain effective members of the legal
profession.
“Judge Marlow has been a strong supporter of lawyer recovery
for 20 years.” said Lawrence Zimmerman of Albany (Hiscock &
Barclay), chair of the Lawyer Assistance Committee. “He recognizes
that assisting lawyers to overcome their challenges benefits society and
the legal profession, as well as the individual lawyer.”
Marlow, currently of counsel to Gellert & Klein, previously
served as a trial judge on town, family, county and state Supreme Court
levels.
During his judicial tenure, Marlow has chaired the Advisory Committee
on Judicial Ethics since 2007. He served on the Committee on Fiduciary
Appointments and the Committee to Foster Confidence in the Judicial
Election Process.
The award recognizes an individual who has contributed to assisting
lawyers in recovery. Marlow received his award on June 23 in
Cooperstown.
The 77,000-member New York State Bar Association is the largest
voluntary state bar association in the nation. It was founded in
1876.
