HONORABLE LORETTA A. PRESKA RECEIVES STANLEYH. FULD
AWARD
Well-respected judge honored for
excellence in commercial law
NEW
YORK—United States
District Court Judge Loretta A. Preska will receive the Stanley H. Fuld
Award today at the Annual Meeting of the New York State Bar Association.
The award is an annual honor presented by the Commercial and Federal
Litigation Section. Judge Preska is a judge in the Southern District of
New York, and she is currently a nominee to the United States Court of
Appeals for the Second Circuit.
“Throughout her distinguished career, Judge
Preska has made many valuable contributions to commercial law as both a
litigator and jurist. Her record of excellence is one that all lawyers
aspire to achieve,” said Commercial and Federal Litigation Section
Chair Peter Brown of New York(Baker & Hostetler LLP). “It is an honor to present this most prestigious award to
her.”
Preska has served as a United States District Court
Judge since 1992. During her tenure,
she has written opinions on a wide range of complex
issues. Prior to her judicial
appointment, she was a partner of Hertzog, Calamari &
Gleason.
Preska currently chairs the Second Circuit
Federal-State-Judicial Council. She
previously served as a member of the Committee on Federal-State
Jurisdiction of the Judicial Conference of
the United States.
Preska received her undergraduate degree from
the College of Saint
Rose, and earned her
law degree from the Fordham University School of
Law. She received an LL.M. in Trade
Regulation from New York University School of Law.
The Fuld Award is named for the late Chief Judge
Stanley H. Fuld, who also served on the New York State Court of Appeals
from 1946 to 1973. The award is
presented annually to recognize outstanding contributions to the
development of commercial law and jurisprudence
in New York. Hon. P. Kevin Castel
of New York(United
States District Court for the Southern District of New York) will
present the award to Judge Preska.
Previous award recipients include: Hon. Albert M.
Rosenblatt, Retired, Associate Judge, New York State Court of
Appeals; Hon. Lewis A. Kaplan, U.S. District Judge
for the Southern District of New York; the
New York State Commercial Division Judges; Hon. Antonin Scalia, U.S.
Supreme Court Justice; and Hon. Judith S. Kaye, Retired, Chief Judge of
the State of New York.
Founded in 1988, the 2,600-member Commercial &
Federal Litigation Section strives to improve the quality of
representation of commercial clients in litigation matters, provides a
forum for the improvement of law and procedure in the areas of
commercial and federal litigation, and enhances the administration of
justice.
The 76,000-member New York State Bar Association is
the official statewide organization of lawyers in New
Yorkand the largest
voluntary state bar association in the nation. Founded in 1876, State Bar programs and activities have
continuously served the public and improved the justice system for more
than 130 years.
