Andrew Rush February 20, 2008 NEW YORK BAR FOUNDATION RECEIVES $15,000 GIFT TO ESTABLISH INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAW SECTION FELLOWSHIPSThe Fellowship will take place in fall 2008 and spring and summer 2009. The length of each will be 15-20 hours per week during fall and spring semesters and 35-40 hours during summer. The fellowships, provided through a Foundation grant award to qualifying organizations, will be presented to students attending a law school in New York State to assist with the organizations’ intellectual property matters. The Intellectual Property Law Fellow will also be invited to be a guest member of the NYSBA Intellectual Property Law Section and to attend the section’s executive committee meetings during the term of the fellowship. Public interest intellectual property organizations or charities with the need for an intellectual property law fellow are eligible to apply for the $5,000 grant by April 1, 2008 to receive funding for the fall 2008 fellowship. The deadline for grant proposals for the spring and summer 2009 fellowships is October 15, 2008. A grant application and grant guidelines are accessible at www.tnybf.org. Debra I. Resnick, chair of the Intellectual Property Law Section said, “The officers and members of the Intellectual Property Law Section are very pleased to provide funding for fellowships to encourage law school students to pursue a career in intellectual property law. It is our hope that this work experience will provide a significant and lasting benefit to the students as they pursue their professional legal career. The section is pleased to establish a restricted fund with The New York Bar Foundation and is grateful for the assistance that it has provided in the implementation of the fellowships.” John R. this generous gift from the Intellectual Property Law Section for
fellowships for The Intellectual Property Law Section of the New York State Bar Association introduces members of the Association to the interesting and growing areas of law which make up intellectual property law, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, licensing and Internet intellectual property law issues. It provides NYSBA certified CLE educational programs, other activities and invites the participation of attorneys, law students and non-lawyer members of the business community. According to Horan, The Foundation distributed almost $500,000 in 2007 to fund 48 law-related programs that facilitate the delivery of legal services to those in need, promote improvements in the justice system and law, enhance professional competence and ethics, and increase public understanding of the law and legal system.
