June 29 – July 2, 2009 at Northport High School
8:00 am – 4:00 pm
“From Policy to Practice, Advancing Civic Education”

Dear Educator,

We are proud to announce open registration for our 2009 Summer Institute.  The registration deadline is Friday, June 12th.  After this date, please call the P.A.T.C.H. Office to check for the availability of space. All seats are “first-come, first served.”

Strands this year include (all applicants select one strand to meet their training needs):
• “We the People”The Citizen and the Constitution
• Project Citizen, Public Policy and Civic Engagement
• Character Education and Peer Leadership (K-12)
• Global Issues- International Law and Human Rights
• Forensic Science and Criminal Investigations

The links below include all the information you need to register for the institute this year.  Please note that a modest registration fee is required this year.  All checks should be made payable to “NYSBA / LYC.”  The fee is only $30 per registrant.  Our goal this year is to include as many “new” participants as possible.  If you are a returning Summer Institute participant, please make sure to reach out to a colleague who has never participated so they can enjoy the benefits of our training and materials.  New participants are encouraged to reach out to a colleague as well.  We hope that by encouraging participants to register with their colleagues, participants will find additional support for their civic education efforts beyond the training, materials and ongoing support LYC and P.A.T.C.H. can provide.

Please also note that we have two opportunities to earn graduate credit this year.  For participants that have earned graduate credit from a PATCH Summer Institute in the past, you should note that a “new” course is offered this year.  See the links below about graduate credit from SUNY Stony Brook.  The graduate credit is an option.  It is not required to participate.  Teachers not seeking graduate credit will be provided a certificate of completion for the 30 hour institute which you can provide to your school district for up to 2 in-service credits.  Note that in-service credit is awarded at the discretion of your district.  Applicants completing graduate credit will need to order a transcript from SUNY Stony Brook at the conclusion of the course to provide to their district as required.  Applicants should have these courses approved, if required, by their school district prior to enrollment.  The courses being offered are both pre-approved as “content” courses for employees of the Northport – East Northport UFSD.
