Pro Bono Reporting Requirements-Attorney Registration

Everything Your Clients Should Know Before They Say Yes To A Plea being held on June 14, 2013 from 9am-4:10pm at the New York State Bar Association, One Elk Street, Albany, NY 12207.

This MCLE program is free to providers of mandated representation and will include the following topics:  Calculations of State Prison Sentences and Enrollment of Defendants in Prison Programs; Demystifying Parole; Determining a Client's Predicate Felony Status; Sex Offender Registration Act Overview; Post-Prison Civil Commitment of Sex Offenders in New York:  A Primer for Criminal Defense Lawyers and Trial Counsel's Role to Ethically Effectuate the Client's Right to Appeal. 

The Outstanding Achievements in Promoting Standards of Excellence in Mandated Representation and the Denison Ray Criminal Defender awards will be presented during the luncheon.

2013 Call for Nominations-Award for Outstanding Achievements in Promoting Standards of Excellence in Mandated Representation and the Denison Ray Criminal Defenders Award.  A note from Chair Norman P. Effman:

Dear Colleague:

As Chair of the Committee to Ensure Quality of Mandated Representation of the New York State Bar Association, I am pleased to ask you to consider submitting a nomination for the Denison Ray Criminal Defender Award, for the Award for Outstanding Achievements in Promoting Standards of Excellence in Mandated Representation, or both. The Denison Ray award, named in memory of a career legal activist who led legal services programs in New York and other states, recognizes the extraordinary commitment of public service attorneys who provide zealous and skilled representation to indigent criminal defendants. The Excellence Award recognizes those individuals and organizations whose commitment to surpassing the NYSBA Standards for Providing Mandated Representation to clients in criminal proceedings and Family Court is exemplary.

The nominations brochure sets forth the eligibility criteria for these awards. Volunteer Lawyer for a Day-Consumer Credit Project
The New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) seeks volunteer admitted attorneys and/or 2nd and 3rd year law students and law graduates for a public interest opportunity with the Volunteer Lawyer for a Day-Consumer Credit Project for unrepresented litigants in New York City's Civil Courts.

NYLAG is seeking volunteers for this program in the Bronx and Queens' courthouses. Both locations are easily accessible by public transportation and interns will be able to assist particularly vulnerable and overlooked litigants in desperate need of representation. Volunteers are needed Monday and Thursday, from 9:00 AM-1:00PM.
