STATE BAR ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES CREATION OF SENIOR
LAWYERS SECTION
Association’s 25th Section to provide
important resources for lawyers 55+
ALBANY— With an increasing number of older lawyers continuing
to practice, The New York State Bar Association has created a new Senior
Lawyers Section, for lawyers age 55 and older. Senior lawyers currently
make up 25 percent of the Association’s membership, and include
those who continue to work full time at law firms or in solo practices,
as well as those who opt for part-time employment opportunities or
donating pro bono services in their communities. The Association’s
House of Delegates approved the Section’s creation at its November
1st meeting in Albany.
“As an active and significant
segment of the Association’s membership, senior lawyers bring an
extraordinary wealth of knowledge and expertise to a diverse range of
practice areas,” said Association President Bernice K. Leber
(Arent Fox LLP). “The new Senior
Lawyers Section will provide its members with targeted relevant services
to help them continue their great service to the public and the legal
profession. I want to thank Justin
Vigdor for his outstanding leadership in working to make the 25th
section of the Association a reality.”
“Particularly in the current
economy, more lawyers are deciding to continue their careers
longer. The knowledge, experience and
skill they bring to bear is tremendously valuable – whether
they’re in private practice or performing community
service. The Senior Lawyers Section is
intended to provide our members with vital resources to maintain their
practices and offer their experience and expertise to young lawyers and
community projects as well,” said Association Past President and
Senior Lawyers Section Chair Justin L. Vigdor of Rochester(Boylan, Brown, Code, Vigdor & Wilson,
LLP).
Evolving from the Association’s
Special Committee on Senior Lawyers created in 2006, the Section will
serve its members by providing: pro bono opportunities and mentoring
opportunities; CLE programs, seminars and lectures; career
transition counseling; pre- and post-retirement planning and investing
advice; and other services and social opportunities for senior lawyers.
It will also serve as the voice of senior lawyers in the association and
the community.
The 74,000-member New York State
Bar Association is the official statewide organization of lawyers
in New Yorkand
the largest voluntary state bar association in the
nation. Founded in 1876, NYSBA programs and
activities have continuously served the public and improved the justice
system for more than 130 years.
