Welcome to the virtual home of the Torts, Insurance and Compensation Law Section (TICL) of the New York State Bar Association.  The TICL Section prides itself on the meaningful value-added services that it consistently has provided to its members, and for which it continues to be known.  Whether it is The TICL Journal, featuring peer-written substantive articles relating to the practice areas we represent, our exceptional continuing legal education course offerings, Section networking events, or any of the myriad of other services to our membership, TICL offers an assortment of opportunities for professional development.  We also offer easy access to updated case law, proposed legislation that impacts our areas of practice, as well as a forum to discuss ideas among our peers throughout the state.

Membership is the engine that drives the Section, and its members and leaders are its fuel.  The TICL Section includes attorneys that represent all manner of parties in every conceivable civil forum.  We hale from a cross-section of industry and include plaintiffs, defendants, general practice law firms, staff counsel, risk managers and litigation management executives.  Our ranks include respected members of the bench and bar, all of whom are dedicated and supportive professionals who share their time and expertise.  From formal mentoring of young lawyers, to Superstorm Sandy volunteer relief efforts through partnership with the Bar Foundation and other professional organizations, TICL members are in service to others in the legal community and beyond.

TICL is unique in that the Section also focuses on substantive and procedural issues facing attorneys practicing in the area of torts, insurance and compensation law.  Our Committees reflect this emphasis, targeting over 15 substantive areas of law that include:  Automobile Liability, Business Torts and Employment Litigation, Ethics and Professionalism, Information Technology, Insurance Coverage, Municipal Law, Premises Liability/Labor Law, Products Liability and Professional Liability.  The Section also has two Divisions targeted to issues addressing practitioners in the Construction and Surety Law and Workers’ Compensation Law arenas.  With the benefit of multiple practice-area perspectives, our members are increasingly networked, and a number of events are held throughout the year offering the chance to enhance one’s knowledge and exchange ideas with colleagues that share similar interests.  Additional membership resources include archived, searchable Section publications and access to TICL Section discussion forums.

Among other initiatives, the Torts, Insurance and Compensation Law Section has embraced the New York State Bar Association’s Diversity efforts.  TICL has been recognized as a 2013 “Section Diversity Champion” for our efforts on the diversity and inclusion fronts.  TICL has placed, and continues to place, considerable emphasis on a number of opportunities for minority attorneys, including but not limited to mentoring, leadership development, CLE scholarship, NYSBA event sponsorship and a host of other initiatives that are aimed at fostering diversity within our membership and Executive Committee.  More ambitious pursuits lie ahead as we continue to focus on growing our membership through young and diverse practitioners.
The TICL summer meeting this year is in the great City of Annapolis, Maryland, from August 18th to 21st.  Please join us for CLE, camaraderie and fun in a nearby Capitol City on the waterfront, which is home to the United States Naval Academy and a short drive to Baltimore and D.C. sights and activities.

To our members and future members:  In being a part of the Section, the Section is invested in you.  Join us and be active.  Lecture, write, publish, learn, network.  Take advantage of everything that TICL has to offer.  In a word, belong.  You will be glad that you do.  The opportunities are endless and you always are welcome.
