Chappaqua Lawyer Named President-Elect of NYSBA

NEW YORK - Kenneth G. Standard, special counsel in the labor and employment law practice group at the Manhattan office of the international law firm of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, was selected as president-elect of the 70,000-member New York State Bar Association (NYSBA). The House of Delegates, the Association’s decision and policy-making body, elected the Chappaqua resident at the organization’s 126th annual meeting in Manhattan. Standard received his undergraduate degree from Harvard College and earned his law degree from Harvard Law School. In addition, he holds an LL.M degree from New York University School of Law. Prior to joining Morgan Lewis, Standard served as Assistant General Counsel for Labor Relations, Environmental and Benefit Plans at Consolidated Edison Company (ConEd) of New York City. In addition, he is the former Director of the Office of Legal Services of the New York City School System and was earlier Vice-President and Counsel of the Products Division of the Bristol-Myers Company. Standard is a former member-at-large of the State Bar’s Executive Committee and Vice-President representing the First Judicial District (New York County). Standard has also served on numerous NYSBA committees including: Judicial Selection, Law Governing Firm Structure and Operation (MDP), Association Governance, and Executive Director Search. Standard is NYSBA Treasurer and will continue as such until he takes office as President-Elect on June 1 of this year. A sustaining member of the NYSBA, Standard is a Life Fellow of both The New York State and American Bar Foundations. He also continues to be an active member of The Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the American Bar Association and the National Bar Association. Active in community affairs, Standard has held numerous offices at the Harvard Club of New York City, including serving three years as Vice-President, followed by three years as President of the 12,000-member organization. As President, he led the Club in the renovation of its landmark Manhattan clubhouse and the construction of its recently opened eight-story addition. Standard serves as a Director of the Visiting Nurse Service of New York City. He is a former Director of the Harvard Club of New York City Foundation and of the United Seamen’s Service. He is also the former Vice-Chairman of the board of the Aspirin Foundation of America. Along with his duties as chair of the House of Delegates, as President-Elect Standard will co-chair the President’s Committee on Access to Justice (formed to help ensure civil legal representation is available to the poor). Standard will serve as President-Elect until June 1, 2004, when he will become NYSBA President.
