NYSBA Launches Its Fifth Public Education Radio Campaign, "Lawyers: Trusted Advisers"

ALBANY – The New York State Bar Association is launching the fifth in a series of statewide radio
campaigns providing information designed to inform New Yorker's about their legal rights and how the law affects them in everyday situations.

The campaign, titled, "Lawyers: Trusted Advisers," is sponsored in cooperation with the 250-member stations of the New York State Broadcasters Association. It will air statewide for four weeks beginning November 8 and concluding on December 5.

State Bar President Kenneth G. Standard of Chappaqua (Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, LLP) said, “We produced these radio announcements because informed civic participation requires an understanding of the role of law in society and we trust that they also will promote confidence in the legal profession." He said the Association was pleased to partner again with the New York State Broadcasters Association in this effort.

Following are the four radio scripts, narrated by WINS news anchors Catherine Smith and Doug O’Brien, who is a state bar member:

Script 1 -"LegalEase":

You've got your act together. Personal papers. . .in order. You feel good that you've provided for your loved ones, should something happen to you. But what if you're not able to speak for yourself? Would your caregivers know your wishes? Whether you want treatment or not, you can direct your caregivers without saying a word. Script 2 - "Trusted Adviser”:

Voice 1: Skeptics said she could never own her own company.
Voice 2: A Lawyer shows her how she can.
Voice 1: The bank denied her a loan.
Voice 2: A lawyer helps her qualify.
Voice 1: The landlord won't give her company a lease.
Voice 2: A lawyer helps her get one.
Voice 1: A government agency requires her company to have a business plan.
Voice 2: A lawyer helps her write one.
Voice 1: Skeptics said she could never own her own company.
Voice 2: A lawyer helps prove them wrong.
Voice 1: You have rights. New York lawyers protect them.

Script 3 - "Rule of Law”:

Voice 1: To read the headlines, it seems our way of life is open to attack from inside and outside forces.
Voice 2: We live in challenging times.
Voice 1: Change seems certain.
Voice 2: But one thing doesn't change. . . our system of government. . . based not on the politics of the moment. . .but on the rule of law.
Voice 1: The founders of our country made it that way.
Voice 2: Think about it.

Script 4 - "Starting A Business”:

Voice 1: You're thinking of starting your own business.
Voice 2: But there are so many things to consider.
Voice 1: Hiring employees. . . .Dealing with suppliers and customers. . .Licensing requirements and tax laws.
Voice 2: . . . a lawyer can help.
Voice 1: When you're about to take a big step like opening a business, you want professional advice.
Voice 2: You can get it from an attorney.

This marks the fifth time since 1996 that the state bar and the broadcasters association have collaborated on a statewide campaign.
