March 07, 2005
ALBANY - The New York State Bar Association's Committee on Children and the Law is inviting nominations from throughout the state for its 2005 Howard A. Levine Award.

Each year the committee presents the award to recognize outstanding accomplishments in promoting involvement in New York's juvenile justice and child welfare system, according to committee chair Anne Reynolds Copps of Albany.

The award is named for former Court of Appeals Associate Judge Howard A. Levine, who in 1979, became the first chair of the then-NYSBA Special Committee on Juvenile Justice. Levine has been a strong proponent and leader in the effort to improve New York's child welfare and juvenile justice systems.

Among past recipients of the award are eminent child welfare advocates, judges, and legislators. They include: Matilda Cuomo, state Assemblymen Albert Vann of Brooklyn and William Hoyt of Erie County, Chief Judge Judith S. Kaye, Assemblywoman Helene E. Weinstein of Brooklyn and Lenore Gittis of The Legal Aid Society of New York.

Nominations must be submitted to the state bar no later than March 28. Nominations should be sent to: reed@delinquency.org. For further information, contact Jean Grout at the NYSBA, 518-463-3200 or jgrout@nysba.org, to request a nomination form. The award will be presented later this spring.
