CLE Program: Ethics for Real Estate Lawyers

ALBANY – Lawyers who concentrate their practice in real estate matters can get answers to the everyday questions about ethical considerations in their practice area by attending a special half-day program on the unique ethical dilemmas they encounter.

Sponsored by the Real Property Law Section and the Committee on Continuing Legal Education of the New York State Bar Association, the program will take place September 23 at the Crowne Plaza in Albany from 8:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.; in Rochester and Tarrytown on September 28, and in New York City on December 6. Anne Reynolds Copps of Albany is chair and moderator for the program. Speakers will be the Hon. Anthony V. Cardona, presiding justice of the state Supreme Court Appellate Division for the Third Department; Peter V. Coffey of Schenectady (Englert Coffey & McHugh, LLP); John G. Hall of Staten Island (Law Firm of Hall and Hall, LLP); Mark S. Ochs of Albany (chief attorney for the Third Department Committee on Professional Standards); and Mark J. Solomon of Ithaca (LoPinto Schlather Solomon and Salk).

The program will address the practical ethical concerns and issues typically encountered by attorneys such as, escrow account situations, conflicts of interest, the unlawful practice of law and offering non-legal services and contracting with non-legal professionals to offer legal and other services. The speakers will explore the responsibilities of lawyers to the profession and what the future may hold in terms of balancing life issues, culture issues and the changing demographics in the profession.

The program has been approved for 4.0 MCLE credit hours in ethics for all attorneys, including the newly admitted. Early registrations received or postmarked 10 days prior to the session is $80 for NYSBA members and $150 for non-members.
