Summary:

This CLE is Part I of a three part series of luncheon CLEs sponsored by the E-Health and Information Systems Special Committee of the Health Law Section Part I will feature a  presentation by Jonathan B. Karmel, HIPAA Privacy Officer and Associate Counsel for the New York State Department of Health.   In addition, an overview of HIPAA Security Breach/HITECH standards for lawyers as Business Associates will be provided by John F. Darling, Esq.

In Part I, you will receive a basic understanding of the  new HITECH Act provisions and Security Breach provisions of HIPAA as applied in various fact patterns involving a lawyer’s representation of  health care providers. 

Speakers:

Jonathan B. Karmel provides legal advice to Helen Hayes Hospital, which is a rehabilitation facility operated by the State of New York He also handles health IT issues for the Office of Health Information Technology Transformation. 

John F. Darling, Esq., is currently with Ruffo Tabora Mainello & McKay P.C., and has previously worked as Associate Counsel with the Office of the Medicaid Inspector General.

What is a CLE Webcast?
A Webcast is a live Internet broadcast, with audio and video streaming of a seminar. You can participate in the program from the comfort of your home or office, without having to travel to a seminar site. The webconferencing feature allows you to ask questions of the speakers live online.

What do I need to participate in a Webcast seminar?
• A high-speed Internet connection
• A computer with sound card and speakers (16 bit or better)
• A recent version of Acrobat Reader in order to download and view materials
• Adobe Flash Player

How will I receive written materials?
Connection information will be emailed to you 24 hours before the program begins. The written materials are available for viewing online during the seminar, or, if you prefer, you can download them and print them before participating in the seminar. All registrants will be forwarded a web link to access the program and course materials. If you would like a hard copy of the written materials mailed to you, please contact the CLE Registrar.

Will I be able to ask questions?
During the seminar, attendees may submit questions to the speakers via the Internet, and the speakers will answer the questions during their presentation.
