Many great
programs and books are available on the basic requirements for starting
a solo or small law practice. Still, all experienced solo or small firm
lawyers have lists of questions they wish they had asked, or things they
never realized were important, until several years after opening their
firms.
A panel
of solo and small firm lawyers who successfully opened and maintain
their practices will share what they learned “the hard way”
with tips that will help smooth the way to getting your practice
off to a good start.
Come join us or
log in to hear their valuable insights.

About the Presenters
David S. Caplan, the program
moderator and Principal of the Law Offices of David S Caplan, launched
his practice in California’s
Silicon
Valley in 2005, after 20 years with
one of the area’s leading business insolvency firms.
He is a recognized expert in transactions involving
distressed technology companies, including mergers & acquisitions,
business operations and venture capital financing, along with Chapter 11
and out‑of‑court workouts. In
mid-2006, he extended his practice to the East Coast, and the firm now
serves clients in North Carolina’s
Research Triangle and the metro New York region.
Carlene Jadusingh (“CJ”)
is the author of the Lawyers in Transition Committee’s blog
“Reasonable Doubt.” She has remained in solo practice
since she opened her firm in 2009, just one year out of law
school. Carlene is admitted to practice in New
York state and federal courts - both
the Southern and Eastern Districts of New
York. Located in
lower Manhattan, her
practice covers a broad range of areas, including
landlord-tenant,immigration, employment law, domestic partnership
issues, wills, and contracts. She also serves as a counselor
and expert to other attorneys in federal court on matters involving
federal probation, supervised release and federal pretrial
services.
Marshall R.
Isaacs is the author of the
NYSBA blog, “Smallfirmville.” Through the blog,
Mr. Isaacs offers his thought-provoking and witty insights
into New York law and
small firm practice. Mr. Isaacs began practicing in 1993 and
opened his own firm in 2002 after his home and workplace were uprooted
by the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Mr. Isaacs attributes his success
in business and court to his passion for life, law and a genuine concern
for his clients.
Lori A. Cantwell, a 1990 Syracuse Law
School Graduate, practices with her husband in Plattsburgh, NY, on the banks of historic Lake
Champlain. They opened their
practice in 1997 after each of them practiced in a variety of other
contexts for several years. Today, their small town general
practice is thriving, with concentrations in Labor, Employment, Real
Estate, Business, Corporate, and Criminal law along with general Civil
and Administrative Litigation.
Willard H. DaSilva, a partner in the
Garden City firm of DaSilva, Hilowitz & McEvily, first started his own law firm more than 50 years ago, only a
few months after being admitted to the New
York bar. Through his practice, he has been
rated one of the 100 best matrimonial lawyers in the nation and a
recognized expert in his field as a litigator, author and
lecturer.
