David Louis Cohen

David Louis Cohen of
Kew Gardens (Law Office of David L. Cohen, Esq.) has been elected to serve
as Vice-President for the Eleventh District of the Association’s
Executive Committee.
Cohen received his undergraduate
degree from New York University,
and his law degree from Brooklyn
Law School.
Cohen has been in private practice
since 1975, primarily litigating in state and federal courts. He
currently serves as counsel to the New York State Assembly Committee on
Codes, where he advises the Committee Chair on proposed criminal justice
legislation, drafts legislation, and negotiates budget and legislative
issues with governor’s office. He was a member of the New York
State Assembly, 27th Assembly District, from 1980 to
1982. He began his law career as a staff attorney with the Legal Aid
Society, Criminal Defense Division.
Cohen is a member of the
Association’s House of Delegates, Criminal Justice Section, and
the Federal Criminal Practice Committee. Cohen is President of the
Queens County Bar Association, is past President of the Criminal Courts
Bar Association of Queens, and is a founding member of the New York
State Association on Criminal Defense Attorneys.
The 26-member Executive Committee has the authority to
act and speak for the NYSBA, consistent with previous action of the
House of Delegates, when the House is not in session. The Executive
Committee meets quarterly and at other times as necessary. The Executive
Committee is composed of the President, President-Elect, Treasurer, and
Secretary of the Association. In addition, there are vice-presidents
from each of the twelve judicial districts (the 1st district has two
Vice-presidents) in the state and eight members-at-large. The immediate
past president is also a member of this body. All officers are elected
to serve one-year terms.
The 74,000 member New York State
Bar Association is the official statewide organization of lawyers
in New York and the
largest voluntary state bar association in the nation. Founded in 1876,
NYSBA programs and activities have continuously served the public and
improved the justice system for more than 130 years.
