
Samuel F. Abernethy

Samuel F. Abernethy of New York (Menaker & Herrmann LLP) has been
elected Member-at-Large of the Executive Committee of the New York State
Bar Association (NYSBA).
Abernethy received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University
and earned his law degree from Fordham Law School.
A resident of Rye, Abernethy represents companies and individuals in
the commercial arena, with a concentration in commodities, derivatives,
and securities matters. His practice includes litigation and
arbitration, regulatory matters (including SRO and agency
investigations, disciplinary matters, and registrations), transactional
work and general corporate, mergers and acquisitions, and private
placements. He also has served as an arbitrator and expert in
commodities-related disputes.
A member of the House of Delegates, Abernethy currently chairs the
Special Committee on Standards for Pleading in Federal Litigation. He
previously chaired the Business Law Section and the Derivatives &
Structured Products Law Committee. He is a member of the Committees on
Diversity and Leadership Development, Membership, and Minorities in the
Profession.
Abernethy also is a member of the Committee on Futures Law of the New
York City Bar Association and the American Bar Association’s
Committee of Futures Law. Within the community, he is a board member and
chairman of the Saint Andrew’s Society of the State of New York
and a board member of the Burns Society of New York. He also is a
director of the United States Court Tennis Association.
Abernethy also served in the U.S. Coast Guard for three years, rising
to the rank of Lieutenant and earning a Bronze Star with a combat V for
his service as commanding officer on an 82’ gun boat in the
Vietnam War.
