STATE BAR ASSOCIATION HOSTS FORUM ON
PRO BONO OPPORTUNITIES IN CAPITAL DISTRICT
Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman and New York State Bar
Association President Seymour W. James, Jr. (The Legal Aid Society in
New York City) will deliver opening remarks at “Pro Bono
Anew,” a program on volunteer opportunities for attorneys in the
Capital District, on Tuesday, November 13 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the
State Bar Center, One Elk Street, Albany.
The program will focus on new pro bono initiatives
adopted by the state court system, as well as local opportunities for
attorneys to provide legal assistance to low-income New Yorkers.
• Hon. Victoria Graffeo, Associate Judge of
the Court of Appeals, will explain the new rule requiring future law
school graduates to perform at least 50 hours of pro bono service before
being eligible to practice law in New York.
• Emmy Chresomales, assistant deputy counsel,
the state Office of Court Administration, will describe the expanded
rule governing Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits for pro bono
work.
• Local attorneys will offer an overview of
local pro bono programs and opportunities. Panelists include Kristie
Cinelli of The Legal Aid Society in Albany, Barbara Davis of Albany
County Bar Association, Samantha Howell of Prisoners Legal Services,
Susan Pattenaude of The Legal Project and Erica “Nic”
Rangel of Albany Law School. Daniel J. Hurteau of Albany (Nixon
Peabody) will serve as moderator.
Participants will earn 1 MCLE credit in Ethics. The
