BUFFALO LAW STUDENT RECEIVES LORRAINE POWER THARP SCHOLARSHIP

Alissa M. Fortuna, a third-year law student at University at Buffalo Law School, is the recipient of the Lorraine Power Tharp Scholarship, The New York Bar Foundation announced today.

“Through her academic excellence, interest in public service and integrity, Ms. Fortuna embodies the core values that Lorraine Power Tharp held dear,” said Bar Foundation President Cristine Cioffi of Niskayuna (Cioffi•Slezak•Wildgrube).  “She is a most deserving recipient and a future star of the legal profession.”

A graduate of the University of Rochester, Fortuna volunteered with the Volunteer Lawyers Project, where she helped indigent clients facing eviction. She received the Project’s In-House Volunteer Award in 2011. She is active in the Buffalo Human Rights Law Review, Buffalo Public Interest Law Program and the Niagara Cup Moot Court Competition.

Fortuna will receive a $1,500 scholarship, sponsored by the Real Property Law Section of the New York State Bar Association. The scholarship is named for Lorraine Power Tharp, a former president of the Association and past chair of the Real Property Law Section.

“The Real Property Law Section is thrilled to present Ms. Fortuna with this scholarship,” said Mindy H. Stern of New York City (Schoeman Updike & Kaufman), vice-chair of the Real Property Law Section. “Ms. Fortuna’s expressed desire to continue Lorraine Power Tharp’s legacy and effect positive change in the world are a fitting tribute to her.”

“I am so honored to be selected the 2012 recipient of the Lorraine Power Tharp Scholarship,” said Alissa Fortuna. “Lorraine Power Tharp had an absolutely extraordinary career and deeply touched the lives of all around her. She left the world a better place.”
