JUDGE JED S. RAKOFF RECEIVES STANLEY H. FULD AWARD
FROM THE NEW YORK STATE BAR ASSOCIATION
U.S. District Court Judge Jed S. Rakoff—long praised for
handling high-profile matters with creativity, commitment to justice and
judicial independence, and for his expertise and dedication to the
development of business and securities law—has been recognized by
the New York State Bar Association with its Stanley H. Fuld Award.
The award, named for the late chief judge of the state Court of
Appeals, is presented annually by the Bar Association’s Commercial
and Federal Litigation Section for outstanding contributions to the
development of commercial law and jurisprudence in New York.
“Judge Rakoff epitomizes everything the public expects a judge
to be—fair, diligent, and knowledgeable,” said Section Chair
Tracee E. Davis of New York City (Zeichner Ellman & Krause).
“His experience as a federal prosecutor and in private practice
prepared him well for his current role. This award is richly
deserved.”
Judge Rakoff was recommended for the federal judgeship in the
Southern District of New York by then-U.S. Sen. Daniel P. Moynihan of
New York and nominated to the post by President Clinton in 1995.
Prior to serving on the federal bench, Judge Rakoff was an assistant
U.S. attorney in the Southern District of New York from 1973 to 1980. He
was chief prosecutor of the Business and Securities Fraud Prosecutions
Unit from 1978 to 1980 before resuming private practice work.
Judge Rakoff is a graduate of Swarthmore College. He earned a
master’s degree in philosophy from Oxford University, Balliol
College, and a law degree from Harvard Law School. He is an adjunct
professor of law at Columbia University.
The award was presented January 23 at the Commercial and Federal
Litigation Section luncheon during the Bar Association’s Annual
Meeting in New York City.
The New York State Bar Association, with 76,000 members, is the
largest voluntary state bar association in the country. It was founded
in 1876.
