PAST STATE BAR PRESIDENT KENNETH G. STANDARD
RECEIVES HON. GEORGE BUNDY SMITH PIONEER AWARD
Manhattan attorney Kenneth G. Standard has been honored with the 2013
Honorable George Bundy Smith Pioneer Award, given by the Commercial and
Federal Litigation Section of the New York State Bar Association.
Standard, who was president of the State Bar from 2004-2005 and the
second African-American to hold the position, was honored for his
commitment to legal excellence and increasing diversity in the
profession. Former state Court of Appeals Judge George Bundy Smith
presented the award on March 18 at the section’s Smooth Moves
program, “Enhancing Your Professional Profile through Board
Service: Opportunities in the For-Profit and Not-For-Profit
Sectors,” at a reception and networking event held at the Lincoln
Center for the Performing Arts in Manhattan.
“Kenneth G. Standard has led and motivated countless attorneys
of color to become bar leaders and stewards of the profession. His
distinguished career, commitment to diversity and generosity inspire us
all,” said Section Chair Tracee E. Davis of New York City
(Zeichner Ellman & Krause). “We are pleased to recognize a
true trailblazer and outstanding role model.”
Standard is a member of the law firm Epstein, Becker & Green and
co-chair of the State Bar’s Committee on Diversity. A resident of
Chappaqua, he graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Law School, and
earned an LL.M. degree from New York University School of Law.
At the same event, Catalina Ford, a first-year student at Fordham
University School Law, was recognized as the recipient of The New York
Bar Foundation’s Commercial & Federal Litigation Section
Minority Fellowship. She will receive a $6,000 fellowship to work this
summer in the chambers of New York State Supreme Court Commercial
Division Justice Jeffrey Oing.
A graduate of Agnes Scott College, Ford is a hotline volunteer with
WomensLaw.org and a volunteer research assistant at the Moving
Minds Forward Foundation.
The 76,000-member New York State Bar Association is the largest
voluntary state bar association in the nation. It was founded in
1876.
