NEW YORK BAR FOUNDATION HONORS HON. RICHARD J.
BARTLETT WITH LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
The New York Bar Foundation will confer its Lifetime Achievement
Award on Hon. Richard J. Bartlett of Glens Falls, past president of the
Foundation, on January 28th in New York City.
“Judge Bartlett’s leadership was invaluable in supporting
and promoting the charitable and educational activities of The New York
Bar Foundation. We are delighted to honor him with this prestigious
award and to acknowledge him for his years of service and generosity to
the Foundation,” said Foundation President M. Catherine Richardson
(Bond Schoeneck & King PLLC, Syracuse).
The award presentation will take place at the Fellows of The New York
Bar Foundation Dinner at the Harmonie Club.
Bartlett’s distinguished legal career as a judge, lawyer,
legislator and educator has spanned more than 60 years. Currently a
principal at Bartlett, Pontiff, Stewart & Rhodes PC, he previously
served as a state Supreme Court justice and was the first Chief
Administrative Judge of New York. He is a former dean and professor of
law of Albany Law School of Union University.
He previously chaired the Temporary Commission on Revision of the Penal
Law and Criminal Code, the Judicial Commission on Justice for Children,
and the New York State Board of Law Examiners. He served as secretary of
the New York State Bar Association and was the 2004 recipient of the
Bar’s highest honor, the Gold Medal. Within the Glens Falls
community, Bartlett received the Crandall Public Library Board of
Trustees’ Henry Crandall Award and the Warren County Bar
Association’s Charles Evans Hughes Award.
Bartlett received his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University
and earned his law degree from Harvard Law School. From 1951-53, he was
a Captain in the U.S. Air Force, JAG, where he served with the 8th
Fighter-Bomber Wing, Korea.
The Lifetime Achievement Award honors former officers or directors of
the Foundation who, due to term limits, are no longer able to serve in
that capacity, or who, prior to the establishment of term limits, served
a minimum of 10 years as an officer or director of the Foundation. The
honoree’s service and leadership (as officer or director) must
have significantly advanced the purposes of the Foundation. In addition,
the honoree’s service as an officer or director and reputation as
a lawyer and bar leader must have brought significant recognition and
acclaim to the Foundation.
Past recipients include: Maryann Saccomando Freedman (Cohen &
Lombardo, P.C., Buffalo) and Robert MacCrate (Sullivan & Cromwell
LLP, New York). Both served as president of The New York Bar Foundation
and the New York State Bar Association; additionally, MacCrate is a past
president of the American Bar Association.
