NEW YORK STATE BAR LAUNCHES NEW MENTORING PROGRAM
FORCOMMERCIAL & FEDERAL LITIGATION PRACTITIONERS
New
initiative will pair “veterans” with “newer”
attorneys
(NEW YORK
CITY) — In an effort to help create the
next generation of qualified and creative lawyers and to provide them
with meaningful opportunities for professional development, the New York
State Bar Association’s Commercial and Federal Litigation Section
today launched a new mentoring program that pairs veteran practitioners
with young attorneys.
The inaugural event to be
held later this evening at Lincoln Center for
the Performing Arts will be attended by the Honorable Judith S. Kaye
(retired Chief Judge of the State of New York
and currently of counsel to Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom
LLP) and dozens of mentor/mentee pairs who will meet each other for the
first time.
“We all got where
we are by standing on the shoulders of others,” said State Bar
President Stephen P. Younger (Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP).
“I was fortunate to be mentored by giants like Judge Richard J.
Bartlett, Court of Appeals Judge Hugh R. Jones and the Honorable Harold
R. Tyler, Jr. I would not be where I am today without their guidance and
support.
“When I took office
as president of the State Bar Association last June, I urged the members
of our Association to serve as mentors to the next generation of
lawyers, to represent our profession well and, most important, to be
stewards of our profession. I
congratulate and thank the Commercial and Federal Litigation Section for
answering this call to action. This new mentoring program will
undoubtedly leave its mark on young attorneys for generations to
come,” Younger concluded.
The new mentoring program will
offer several components, including:
- A one-on-one mentoring
initiative matching experienced commercial litigators with those who are
newer to the practice;
- Opportunities to work together
on section programs, reports and events that will enhance careers and
the profession; and
- Continuing legal education
programs tailored to young commercial litigators.
Jonathan D. Lupkin of New York
City (Flemming Zulack Williamson Zauderer LLP), chair of the Commercial
and Federal Litigation Section, said, “As the legal profession
continues to struggle in this difficult economy, we aim to provide newer
attorneys with fundamental skills and a potent and meaningful avenue for
professional development.”
Lupkin added, “I
want to thank past section chair Lesley Friedman Rosenthal (Lincoln
Center for the Performing Arts) and Matthew Maron (Ganfer & Shore
LLP), for spearheading this new program and the attorneys who have
graciously agreed to serve as mentors to the next generation of
lawyers.”
Founded in 1988, the 2,400
member Commercial and Federal Litigation Section of the State Bar
strives to improve the quality of representation of commercial clients
in litigation matters, provides a forum for the improvement of law and
procedure in the areas of commercial and federal litigation, and
enhances the administration of justice. The section is committed to
serving the professional development goals of attorneys of color and to
fostering diversity in the profession.
