M. CATHERINE RICHARDSON ELECTED PRESIDENT OF NEW YORK
BAR FOUNDATION
Syracuse native
to lead Foundation’s initiatives throughout the State of
New
York
ALBANY – M. Catherine Richardson, a retired member of the law
firm, Bond, Schoeneck & King, PLLC in Syracuseand former
president of the New York State Bar Association (1996-97), has been
elected president of The New York Bar Foundation by its Board of
Directors. Currently serving as The Foundation’s vice
president, Richardsonwill
begin her one-year term as president on June 1, 2009.
Other officers elected were John J. Kenney (Hoguet Newman Regal & Kenney, LLP, New York) as vice
president; Patricia K. Bucklin (executive director of the New York State
Bar Association, Albany) as secretary; Paul Michael Hassett
(Brown & Kelly, LLP, Buffalo) as treasurer; and
Cristine Cioffi (Cioffi Slezak Wildgrube P.C., Niskayuna) as assistant
secretary. All will begin a one-year term effective June 1,2009 with the
exception of Hassett whose term as treasurer is effective immediately
due to a vacancy.
A member of The New York Bar Foundation Legacy
Society, Richardson was elected a Fellow of The Foundation in 1990 and
served as chair of the Fellows from 2004-2007. She has served as an
officer, director or ex officio director of the Foundation since
1993. Richardson has been awarded the
Onondaga County Bar Association’s Distinguished Lawyer Award
(2003); New York State Bar Association’s prestigious Ruth G.
Schapiro Memorial Award (2002); Syracuse University Law College
Association’s Distinguished Service Award (1996); Albany Law
School’s Kate Stoneman Award (1996); SUNY Oswego’s
Outstanding Alumni (1995); Syracuse Law Review’s Alumni
Achievement Award (1995); the Girls Inc. of Central New York’s
1994 Spirit of American Women Award; Onondaga County Bar
Association’s Pro Bono Award (1989); the 1989 Athena Award from
the Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce Small Business Bureau; the 1988
Take The Lead Award from the Central New York Girl Scout Council; and
the 1987 Post-Standard’s Women of Achievement-Career
Award.
A member of the House of Delegates of the New York
State Bar Association, Richardson also serves as chair of the Standing
Committee on the Delivery of Legal Services at the American Bar
Association; is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation; a member of the
New York State Judicial Institute on Professionalism in the Law; and a
Board member of the New York Chiropractic College,
Oswego College Foundation, Inc., Rosamond Gifford Foundation, Eldercare
of Central New York, Visiting Nurse Association of Central New York, ABA
Retirement Funds, Inc., and Syracuse Research Corporation where she also
serves as vice
president. She served on the Board of Governors of the American Bar
Association from 2003-2006.
During her professional career, Richardsonassisted hospitals in
mergers and consolidations and advised medical centers on corporate and
medical staff bylaws, credentialing of medical staff and allied health
professionals, investigations of Article 28 deficiencies and contracts
between health care providers and consumers. Additionally, she worked on
the formation and certification of an HMO and regularly advised
insurance companies and HMO’s regarding New York State Insurance
Law and Public Health Law.
A graduate of the State University of New York at
Oswego (B.S., 1963), Richardson was awarded degrees from the University
of Northern Colorado (M.A., 1969); Syracuse University College of Law
(J.D., magna
cum laude, 1977); and State University of New
York (honorary Doctor of Laws, 2005). She is a member of
the Order of Coif; Justinian Honorary Law
Society (National Honorary); SUNY Oswego Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi; The
Delta Kappa Gamma Society International (Honor Society of Women
Educators); Kappa Delta Pi (National Education Honorary); and Lambda
Sigma Tau (National Mathematics Honorary).president. She served
on the Board of Governors of the American Bar Association from
2003-2006.
Additionally, elected by the membership of The
Foundation to serve a three-year term as a Board director commencing
