CONVENES THE FIRST MEETING OF ITS NEW INDIA CHAPTER
JUNE 4-6 IN NEW DELHI
More than 100 Members of India’s Legal Profession and
Business Community will Explore India’s Growing Importance in the
World Economy & the Role of New York Law as an International
Standard
(New Delhi, India) More than 100 leaders of India’s legal
profession and business community, as well as representatives from the
United States, London, Germany and Hong Kong, will convene in New Delhi
on June 4-6 for the first meeting of the New York State Bar Association
International Section’s India Chapter. The three-day
conference at the Oberoi Hotel will explore India’s growing
importance in the world economy, the central role of New York law as the
international standard, as well as other pressing legal and business
issues.
Michael W. Galligan, chair of the State Bar’s International
Section (Phillips Nizer LLP, New York City) said, “India
represents one of the oldest and most venerable cultures of the
world. Now, it is fast emerging as a growing and significant
presence on the global economic scene. The development of a close
bond between the New York State Bar Association and the distinguished
jurists and counsel of the India bar is long overdue. We are
naturally very proud that New York law is a standard governing a great
number of international business transactions in the world today but we
know we have much to learn from the scholarship and practical experience
of our Indian colleagues, whose roots in the common law are long and
deep.”
Mr. Galligan also expressed his deep appreciation to Fox Mandal
Little & Co., Advocates and Solicitors (New Delhi); Singh &
Associates, Advocates and Solicitors (New Delhi) and Trustman & Co.,
Advocates and Solicitors (New Delhi) for sponsoring this
conference. He said, “I would like to recognize the generous
financial and organizational support afforded by our India-based
sponsors without which this program would not have been
possible.”
New York State Bar Association President Michael Getnick (Getnick
Livingston Atkinson & Priore, LLP) said, “As the largest
voluntary Bar Association in America – with more than 76,000
members – I am proud to welcome our Indian colleagues. While
I regret not being able to join you at this conference, I look forward
to working with you to expand and open new Chapters in major Indian
centers of commerce and government including Mumbai, Kolkata and
Chennai.”
The workshops and seminars will be presented by well-respected
international legal and business practitioners from New York,
California, India, Hong Kong and London.

Belknap Webb & Tyler, New York City) and James P. Duffy, III, past
chair of the International Section (Sullivan & Worcester LLP, New
York City). Younger, Duffy and Galligan will also be giving
opening remarks at the meeting on Friday, June 5th.
“The members of the International Section have worked
tirelessly throughout the years to cultivate additional relationships
and to expand local ties with attorneys in a host of different countries
around the globe,” said Younger. “The new India
Chapter presents another excellent opportunity to share ideas and
resources, and to collaborate with our legal colleagues in fostering
solutions to a host of issues and challenges that the United States, and
a rapidly-growing nation such as India, are likely to face in the near
future. I would like to congratulate the section on this new
endeavor and look forward to working with you as we go
forward.”
Chaired by Kaviraj Singh (Trustman & Co., New Delhi), the India
Chapter is one of the International Section's newest Chapters. The
section has more than 50 Chapters around the world in countries
including Australia, Canada, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Denmark, England,

and elsewhere.
The International Section of the New York State Bar Association is
dedicated to the promotion of the international practice of law on all
planes of international life – whether commercially or for the

world. The section, which was founded in 1987, has about 2,200
members. While the majority of the section’s members are
admitted to the Bar of the State of New York, many members are licensed
