STATE BAR ASSOCIATION SPONSORS PROGRAM TO EDUCATE
STUDENTS ON CIVIC PARTICIPATION
Civic education program
helps students understand public policy
ALBANY —The New York State Bar
Association’s Law, Youth & Citizenship program will sponsor
the We the People: Project Citizen Showcase on June 4 at
the Empire State Plaza , North
Concourse, Albany, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The program is offered to students in
grades 5-12 to help them understand the role of public policy in
everyday life. Research studies have shown that students using Project
Citizen believe that they can make a difference in their
communities.
“Each year, the student teams
astound us with their outstanding knowledge, tireless dedication and
inspiring creativity,” said Law, Youth & Citizenship Director
Eileen Gerrish. “I am excited to see what our students will bring
to the showcase this year.”
Project Citizen focuses on the role
of state and local governments in the U.S.federal system. To complete the program, students identify a
problem, conduct research, and create a portfolio that demonstrates
their exploration of the problem and possible public policy solutions.
Past projects have addressed environmental issues and school traffic
safety. Program judges, including NYSBA member attorneys and judges from
the Capital Region, evaluate the portfolios. The top portfolio will go
on to compete in the National Showcase in New
Orleansin
July.
The program is co-sponsored by the
National Conference of State Legislatures and the Center for Civic
Education. For further information, contact lyc@nysba.org.
