NEW YORK STATE BAR ASSOCIATION’S INTERNATIONAL
LAW AND PRACTICE SECTION MAKES DONATION TO PROVIDE EARTHQUAKE
RELIEF
At their annual meeting held this year in Peru, the International Law
and Practice Section of the New York State Bar Association donated
$10,000 to the earthquake relief efforts currently underway in that
country.
New York State Bar Association President Kathryn Grant Madigan of
Binghamton (Levene Gouldin & Thompson LLP) was in attendance at the
meeting and said, “We were honored to present our Peruvian
colleagues with this donation, which demonstrates our historic
commitment, as New York lawyers, to doing the public good and helping
those in need. This was an extraordinary opportunity to meet and
exchange ideas with international bar leaders and policy makers on the
future of international trade and the rule of law, and most especially,
to do what we do best – helping lawyers and their communities in
times of crisis.”
International Law and Practice Section Chair Section Chair Oliver J.
Armas (Thacher Proffitt & Wood LLP) said, “This meeting was
scheduled well in advance of the devastating earthquake that has
affected thousands of people in Peru. The donation made by our section
will go towards providing needed legal services to the victims who are
now working hard to rebuild their lives. Even under these trying
circumstances our meeting was a great success, and we were very pleased
to provide some assistance to our gracious hosts.”
The $10,000 donation was presented to Decana Luz Aurea Saenz Arana,
del Colegio de Abogados de Lima (the Dean of the Lima Bar Association)
at a Gala Reception and Dinner at the Museo Nacional. The funds will be
used to help provide legal services for the victims of the devastating
earthquake. In addition, Madigan extended an honorary NYSBA membership
to the Dean.
The meeting was held over the course of 6 days in Lima and Cusco,
Peru and was attended by more than 230 attorneys from almost every Latin
American country, 9 additional countries and 6 states. Programs held
throughout the meeting afforded NYSBA members with the opportunity to
meet with newly credentialed US Ambassador to Peru, P. Michael McKinley,
Peru Prime Minister Jorge Del Castillo and Chief Justice Francisco
Tavara.
The 72,000-member New York State Bar Association is the
official statewide organization of lawyers in New York and the largest
voluntary state bar association in the nation. Founded in 1876, NYSBA
programs and activities have continuously served the public and improved
the justice system for more than 130 years.
