FREE LEGAL CLINICS AND ATTORNEY RECRUITMENT DRIVE
HIGHLIGHT NATIONAL PRO BONO WEEK IN NEW YORK
Low-income New Yorkers will have an opportunity to talk with
attorneys at free legal clinics sponsored by state and local bar
associations, legal services organizations, law firms and law schools
across New York during National Pro Bono Week October 23 through 29, the
New York State Bar Association announced today.
Other events during the week will honor pro bono attorneys and
encourage other attorneys to donate their services to help society's
most vulnerable citizens.
“By volunteering their services, pro bono attorneys make a
difference in the lives of countless low-income New Yorkers. They help
protect tenants from eviction, keep families together and assist people
with disabilities maintain their benefits. Increasingly during these
uncertain economic times, pro bono attorneys are helping clients who
face bankruptcy," said State Bar Association President Vincent E. Doyle
III of Buffalo (Connors & Vilardo LLP). "We commend lawyers across
New York who make ‘justice for all’ not just a slogan, but a
reality.”
The American Bar Association (ABA) established National Pro Bono Week
in 2009 to support local efforts to expand the delivery of pro bono
legal services, recognize the significant efforts of pro bono attorneys
and showcase the tremendous difference that pro bono lawyers make to our
system of justice, our communities and, most of all, to the clients they
serve.
