NEWBURGH ATTORNEY MAUREEN CRUSH RECEIVES
STATE BAR’S ROOT/STIMSON AWARD
ALBANY—Maureen Crush of Newburgh was honored with the New York
State Bar Association’s Root/Stimson Award, presented by Bar
Association President Seymour W. James, Jr. on June 23 in
Cooperstown.
The award, given by the Committee on Annual Award, honors an attorney
for exemplary community service.
“Maureen Crush is a woman of tremendous vision and service. She
devotes enormous time and uses her legal expertise to make a difference
in her community,” said President James of New York City (The
Legal Aid Society of New York). “She is a most deserving recipient
of this award.”
A partner in the law firm of de Ramon Crush, Crush is president of
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh, which provides decent
affordable housing for low-income New Yorkers. She is one of the
organization’s longest-serving board members. She annually
organizes the “Attorney Build Day” and is a founding member
of the Development Committee which has raised more than $220,000
annually since 2005.
A past president of the Women's Bar Association of Orange and
Sullivan Counties, Crush also is a founding board member of its
foundation. She has led fundraising efforts to provide scholarships to
women law school students and develop community programs on
women’s issues.
She is treasurer of the Women’s Bar Association of the State of
New York. She was a board member of Independent Living, Inc., which
helps persons with disabilities, and a member of the Tri-County Go Red
for Women executive leadership team of the American Heart
Association.
“Maureen is an extraordinary community leader and actively
participates in the causes she believes in. She represents the very best
of our profession and tradition of service,” said Paul Michael
Hassett of Buffalo (Brown & Kelly), past State Bar president and
chair of the Committee on Annual Award’s Root/Stimson Award
subcommittee. “We are thrilled to honor her.”
Crush heads her firm’s corporate and commercial practice group.
She graduated from New York University and Fordham University School of
Law.
The award is named for distinguished lawyers Elihu Root and Henry
Stimson to honor their commitment to public service. Root served in
President Theodore Roosevelt’s administration as secretary of
state, received the Nobel Peace Prize and was a president of the New
York State Bar Association; Stimson served in President Franklin D.
Roosevelt’s administration as secretary of war during World War
II.
The 77,000-member New York State Bar Association is the largest
voluntary state bar association in the nation. It was founded in
1876.
