BUFFALO BAR WEEK FEATURES INTERNATIONAL SUMMIT, HOUSE
OF DELEGATES, FAMILY COURT HEARING, TRIBUTE TO JUSTICE GREEN
New York State Bar Association has planned a variety of law-related
events scheduled to take place in Buffalo from March 27-31. Dubbed
“Buffalo Bar Week,” the agenda features a historic New
York-Ontario legal summit and will culminate with the
Association’s first Buffalo meeting of the House of Delegates
since 1986.
Buffalo Bar Week will also include a hearing by a State Bar
Association task force studying the challenges facing family courts, a
tribute to retired Appellate Division Associate Justice Samuel
L. Green, a two-day interactive continuing legal education
video conference for new and transitioning attorneys, and an educational
forum hosted by our Charity Corps initiative, on how lawyers can better
assist nonprofit organizations.

the legal communities of the U.S. and Canada,” said Bar

TUESDAY, March 27: Tribute to Justice Green. Buffalo
Bar Week kicks off with a Section Appreciation and Recruitment reception
that includes a tribute to Justice Samuel L. Green, the longest-serving
associate justice in the 115-year history of the Appellate Division,
Fourth Department. Green retired December 31 after nearly 29 years on
the court. He will be presented with a resolution in his honor passed by
the State Bar. The reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the
Hyatt Regency Buffalo.

WEDNESDAY, March 28: Legal Summit. The New York and
Ontario bar associations begin a historic, two-day legal summit in
Toronto, with nine programs covering international law and cross-border
legal opportunities. The Toronto event, to be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
at the Ontario Bar Association’s headquarters, will feature a
plenary session on professionalism and access to justice moderated by
New York Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman and
Ontario Chief Justice Warren Keith Winkler.

WEDNESDAY, March 28: Bridging the Gap video
conference. A panel of legal experts will host a two-day
educational program for young lawyers and experienced attorneys
interested in expanding their knowledge. Topics on Wednesday’s
agenda include basic divorce law, power of attorney, business and
immigration law, and estate litigation. Participating attorneys can earn
up to 16 MCLE credits. The program, taking place in New York City, will
be transmitted live to attorneys in Albany and Niagara Falls. The
Niagara Falls video conference will be held at the Conference Center,
Niagara Falls from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

THURSDAY, March 29: Family Court hearing. The State
Bar’s Task Force on Family Court will host the last of four
statewide hearings in Buffalo. The hearing will focus on the impact of
budget cuts on children and families, as well as suggestions for
operational improvements. Speakers include judges, family court
attorneys and family advocacy organizations. The task force is expected
to issue a report in June. The hearing will be held from 10 a.m. to 2:30
p.m. at the United States Courthouse in Buffalo.

THURSDAY, March 29: Legal Summit. The second
day of the international legal summit will be held in Buffalo, and
will feature nine programs on international legal matters and a
plenary session discussing cross-border legal opportunities. The program
will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Adams Mark Hotel in
Buffalo.
THURSDAY, March 29: Bridging the Gap video
conference. The second day of the conference will include
segments on the basics of handling a workers compensation case,
employment law, ethical issues relating to the Rules of Professional
Conduct, litigating a child support proceeding and the fundamentals of
dispositions. It will be held at the Conference Center, Niagara Falls
from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
FRIDAY, March 30: Charity Corps. A panel of legal
experts will discuss the legal issues involved in representing nonprofit
organizations, including fiduciary duties, public disclosure, conflicts
of interest and ethical considerations. Charity Corps is co-sponsored by
the State Bar and the Office of the State Attorney General. The
discussion will be held from 1:45 to 3:45 p.m. at the Erie County Bar
Association in Buffalo.

FRIDAY, March 30: Bar Foundation reception. The New
York Bar Foundation, the charitable arm of the State Bar, will host a
reception for the Eighth Judicial District Fellows. At the reception,
the Foundation will present grants to the Genesee County Youth Bureau in
Batavia (Youth Court), the Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo in Buffalo
(Re-entry Program), the National Federation for Just Communities of
Western New York in Buffalo (First Time/Last Time program) and the
Wyoming County Youth Bureau in Warsaw (Youth Court). The reception will
be held at the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society in Buffalo
from 4 to 6 p.m. and will include a guided tour of the Historical
Society.
FRIDAY, March 30: House of Delegates
reception/dinner. The House of Delegates will welcome members
from around the state at a reception and dinner at the Burchfield Penney
Art Center in Buffalo. At the dinner, special recognition will be made
of the 125th anniversary of the Bar Association of Erie County. The
reception begins at 6 p.m. and the dinner starts at 7 p.m.
SATURDAY, March 31: House of Delegates meeting. For
the first time since 1986, the Bar Association will hold its quarterly
House of Delegates meeting in Buffalo. The agenda includes a
presentation by Judge Robert T. Russell, Jr. on the nationally acclaimed
Buffalo Veterans Treatment Court, a report by the Association’s
Special Committee on Veterans, the recommendations of a committee
studying ways to improve the quality of mandated representation, and a
report of the Special Committee on Immigrant Representation. The
meeting will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency
Buffalo.

SATURDAY, March 31. Young Lawyers networking
event. The Young Lawyers sections of the State Bar and the Erie
County Bar Association will host a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. at
Templeton Landing in Buffalo. It will be an opportunity for attorneys to
network and learn more about membership and bar activities.
