STATE BAR PRESIDENT APPLAUDS GOVERNOR CUOMO
FOR NOMINATING JENNY RIVERA TO COURT OF APPEALS
New York State Bar Association President Seymour W. James, Jr. today
commended Governor Cuomo for nominating Jenny Rivera as an associate
judge of the New York State Court of Appeals.
"Jenny Rivera would bring to the Court of Appeals her keen intellect,
insightful legal scholarship and a commitment to equal justice for all
New Yorkers,” said James (The Legal Aid Society in New York
City).
“The State Bar Association has rated her as well qualified for
the position. In 2012, she won our Diversity Trailblazer Lifetime
Achievement Award and, in 2010, she was the recipient of our Kay
Crawford Murray Award. Her professional achievements also are being
recognized in February by the American Bar Association with its
prestigious Spirit of Excellence Award.”
If confirmed by the state Senate, she would fill a vacancy created by
the Dec. 31, 2012 retirement of Senior Associate Judge Carmen Beauchamp
Ciparick.
Last month, the State Bar Association found Rivera "well qualified"
to serve on the Court of Appeals. The Association has evaluated
candidates for the Court of Appeals since 1967.
The 76,000-member New York State Bar Association is the largest
voluntary state bar association in the nation. It was founded in
1876.
