TENNESSEE ATTORNEY CLAUDIA TORREY RECEIVES
NEW YORK STATE BAR’S NON-RESIDENT MEMBER AWARD
ALBANY—Claudia O. Torrey of Cookeville, Tennessee has been
honored with the Outstanding Non-Resident Member Award, given by the
Membership Committee of the New York State Bar Association.
The award, conferred on January 24 during the Bar’s Annual
Meeting in New York City, recognizes the growing contributions of
non-resident members to the State Bar. Non-resident members comprise
more than 25 percent of the State Bar’s membership.
Torrey has chaired the Subcommittee on Non-Resident Membership of the
Membership Committee since 2004. As chair, she has led efforts to
develop a non-resident listserve and resource page on the State
Bar’s website, as well as created a non-resident information table
and roundtable breakfast during the Annual Meeting.
“Because of Claudia Torrey, our non-resident members have found
greater value and opportunities to get involved in the New York State
Bar Association. Through her tireless advocacy and deft leadership, she
has made our Association richer and more inclusive to all
members,” said State Bar President Seymour W. James, Jr. of
Brooklyn (The Legal Aid Society in New York City). “I can think of
no one more deserving of this honor.”
Torrey was one of the first two out-of-state delegates appointed to
the State Bar’s House of Delegates in 2009. She continues to serve
in that position. She also is an active member of the Health Law Section
and a past member of the Special Committee on Cross-Border Legal
Practice.
A graduate of Syracuse University and New York Law School, Torrey is
an author/columnist on health law.
The 76,000-member New York State Bar Association is the largest
voluntary state bar association in the nation. It was founded in
1876.
