NEW YORK STATE BAR ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES
NEW COMMITTEE CHAIRS
ALBANY—State Bar Association President Seymour W. James, Jr. of
New York City (The Legal Aid Society) has appointed ten attorneys as
chairs and co-chairs of committees within the Association.
The standing and special committees of the State Bar sponsor
conferences, seminars, monitor legislation and conduct research studies.
Each committee contributes to policy-making, both in subject areas and
Association-wide.
The new committee chairs are:
Catherine A. Christian of Manhattan,
Committee on Attorneys in Public Service. A graduate of
Hofstra University and the Dickinson School of Law, Christian is an
assistant district attorney for New York County. She is a member of the
executive staff of the Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor for
the City of New York, where she serves as counsel to the Trial Division
and chief of the Alternative Sentencing Division.
Karen Fisher Gutheil of Manhattan, Committee
on Children and the Law. A graduate of Drake University and the
Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, Gutheil is a staff attorney in the
Special Litigation and Law Reform Unit of the Juvenile Rights Practice
of The Legal Aid Society.
Diana S. Sen of Manhattan, Committee on
Civil Rights. A graduate of the University of Florida and Emory
University Law School, Sen is the senior counsel to LatinoJustice PRLDEF
and head of its Southeastern U.S. Practice.
Kathryn Grant Madigan of Binghamton,
Committee on Leadership Development. A graduate of the
University of Colorado at Boulder and Albany Law School, Madigan is a
partner and founder of the Elder Law Group at Levene Gouldin &
Thompson. She was president of the State Bar in 2007-2008.
Eileen D. Millett of Manhattan, Committee on
Legal Education and Admission to the Bar (co-chair). A graduate
of Syracuse University and the Syracuse University College of Law,
Millett is senior counsel in the Litigation and Health Care and Life
Sciences practices at Epstein Becker Green.
Lynn Beth Oberlander of Manhattan, Committee
on Media Law. A graduate of Yale College and Columbia
University School of Law, Oberlander is the general counsel of The New
Yorker. She previously was the editorial counsel to Forbes.
Mark S. Gorgos of Binghamton, Electronic
Communications Committee (co-chair). A graduate of Union
College and Albany Law School, Gorgos is the managing partner of
Coughlin & Gerhart. He practices in the areas of commercial law,
municipal and education law, public sector labor law and creditor
bankruptcy matters.
Gail Johnston of White Plains, Electronic
Communications Committee (co-chair). A graduate of Bates
College and New York Law School, Johnston is a senior attorney with
Cahill Gordon & Reindel. She concentrates her practice in
litigation.
John S. Marwell of Mount Kisco, Finance
Committee. A graduate of Columbia University and Columbia
University School of Law, Marwell is a partner of Shamberg Marwell &
Hollis. His practice includes land use litigation, zoning, environmental
law and real estate law.
Henry E. Kruman of Malverne, Lawyer
Assistance Committee. A graduate of the State University of New
York at Oswego and the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, Kruman is a
partner at Kruman & Kruman. He concentrates his practice in
matrimonial litigation.
Their terms began on June 1.
The 77,000-member New York State Bar Association is the largest
voluntary state bar association in the nation. It was founded in
1876.
