
Erika W. Nijenhuis

ALBANY—Erika W. Nijenhuis of New
York (Cleary Gottlieb Steen &
Hamilton LLP) has been elected chair of the Tax Section of the New York
State Bar Association.
Nijenhuis received her undergraduate degree from
the University of
Pennsylvania and earned her law degree from the University of Pennsylvania
School of Law and an LL.M. from New York University School of
Law.
Nijenhuis is a partner of Cleary Gottlieb Steen &
Hamilton LLP, where she concentrates her practice
on U.S. income tax, with an emphasis on financial products and
international tax planning matters. She regularly advises
financial institutions and other domestic and foreign clients on issues
relating to capital markets transactions, the development of new
financial products and inbound and outbound business
operations.
A veteran member of the Association’s Tax
Section, Nijenhuis previously served on the section’s executive
committee for a total of eight years, beginning in 1995.
She was co-chair of the section’s Committee on
Financial Instruments and a member of the Committee on Character, Gains
and Losses; Committee on Financial Intermediaries; Committee on Tax
Accounting; Basis Committee; and the Committee on Practice and
Procedure. She has been an officer of the
Tax Section since 2007.
Nijenhuis is recognized as one of
America’s best

Chambers USA America’s Leading Lawyers for Business and The Best
Lawyers in America. She is a frequent lecturer and author on the taxation of
financial products. She is also co-chair of
the Debt Instruments subcommittee of the American Bar
Association’s Tax Section Financial Transactions
Committee.
