Martin Minkowitz
General Practice Section
Martin Minkowitz of New York (Stroock & Stroock &
Lavan LLP) has been elected chair of the General Practice Section of the
New York State Bar Association.
Minkowitz received his undergraduate degree from
Brooklyn College and earned both his law degree and
L.L.M. from Brooklyn Law School.
Minkowitz is of counsel to Stroock & Stroock &
Lavan LLP, concentrating his practice in insurance regulatory and
litigation matters and on workers’ compensation law, in which he
is a nationally recognized author and expert. He was the Deputy
Superintendent and General Counsel of the New York State Insurance
Department from 1981 to 1988, where he was responsible for the
administration, interpretation and enforcement of state insurance laws
and regulations. He also served as General Counsel for the New York
State Workers’ Compensation Board from 1976 to 1981.
A long-tenured member of the State Bar, Minkowitz
served two four-year terms on the State Bar’s House of Delegates
between 1999 and 2008. He currently serves on the General Practice
Section’s Executive Committee and the President’s Committee
on Access to Justice. He previously chaired the Committees on
Professional Discipline, Lawyer Referral Service, and Unlawful Practice
of Law. He served on the Committees to Review to Judicial Nominations
and Professional Ethics.
A frequent lecturer and author, Minkowitz is also an
adjunct professor at New York
University Law School and former instructor of Business Law
at Kingsboro Community
College. He served as President of the
Brooklyn Law School Alumni Association and chaired the National
Conference for Community and Justice, New York Region.
