STATEMENT BY NEW YORK STATE BAR PRESIDENT VINCENT E.
DOYLE III ON U.S. PROSECUTION OF SOMALI SUSPECT IN CIVILIAN
COURT
“We commend the Obama Administration for
its decision to try Somali suspect Ahmed Abdulkadir Warsame in
the Federal District Court for the
Southern District of New York.
“The decision to try cases of alleged terrorist
activities in civilian courts, though controversial in today's political
climate, is consistent with the principles and great traditions of our
nation.
“The New York State
Bar Association has been a leader in advocating the trial of suspected
terrorists in civilian courts. These courts have proved time and again
their ability to afford due process to those charged, while maintaining
the security necessary to protect the participants and the community.
Americans should be proud that we have a justice system that is both
effective and fair. It is a model to which other countries
aspire.
“By this courageous decision, the Obama
Administration has shown the world that this great country is based on
the rule of law.”

Association is the largest voluntary state bar association in the
nation. It was founded in 1876.
