Women on the
Move 2012:
Moving Forward: Building Paths to Success
9:00 a.m.
to 12:15 p.m.
A Networking Buffet Luncheon will follow the
Program
3.5
MCLE Credits: 1.5
Skills; 1.0 Ethics; 1.0 Professional Practice
This program
will be presented in person at the Concierge Conference Center with a
simultaneous webcast option.
Newly admitted attorneys (less than twenty-four months) must attend the
progrm in person to receive New York MCLE credit.
Since the
1980’s, approximately 40% of law school graduates have been
women. Recent statistics document that, as of 2010, a mere
16.5% of large firm partners were women, reflecting the glaring
employment disparities faced by women attorneys. As recently
as 2010, The National Law Journal noted that even female partners
who attain the highest levels of achievement earn on average of $66,000
per year less than their male equivalents.
In this program, an experienced
diverse faculty will address the realities that women attorneys face
today and present a variety of solutions for developing a greater
awareness of the current legal landscape as it affects workplace
disparity. This includes ways to engender change in both
individual career paths and the overall legal profession by the
effective use of legal advocacy skills. The program will be
followed by a buffet luncheon providing attendees ample time to network
with both the faculty and their peers.
Who Should Attend: Attorneys engaged in all areas of
practice will benefit from attending this program.
Program Agenda

a.m. Introduction
9:05 - 9:55
a.m. Gaining
Perspective: Combating Workplace Disparity through
Legislation
With Fair Pay Acts and
anti-discrimination laws on the books, how can such large gaps in
earnings still exist? To begin the process of
empowering women attorneys, we must first understand the laws that seek
to rectify inequality as well as the nature of the disparities that we
face. This panel of experts will explain and analyze legislation
that aims to end gender disparity, including the Lily Ledbetter Fair
Pay Act and the New York State Fair Pay Act and suggest ways
these statutes can be used to correct the existing
disparities.

a.m. Panel Discussion: Communicating
Effectively: Being Heard Loud and Clear
Your ideas are
important. Don’t let your message get lost along the
way!
The key to being an effective
attorney is being an effective communicator.
Whether negotiating a contract,
deposing witnesses, writing a stellar brief, presenting a case to a
jury, meeting with legislators to advocate change or simply trying to
land a client, one thing is certain: Communication is Key.
This segment will feature a
panel of practicing attorneys sharing their secrets of persuasive
communication. They will review strategies which will
pinpoint what to say and how to say it in order to get your voice
heard. In addition, a legal writing expert will share strategies
on how to make the written word as powerful as the spoken word.
Together, the panel will show you how to make communication your most
powerful weapon as you advance in your career.

Going Hi-Tech: Taking Advantage of the Digital Age
Technology has advanced at a
rapid pace in recent years, offering a multitude of options for
attorneys in search of lower costs and increased
efficiency. However, this progress does come with plenty of
potential pitfalls for the naïve practitioner.
This topic will focus on the
effects and ethical implications of the use of Internet-based and mobile
computing by attorneys in their law practices. A published expert on law
and technology will familiarize you with emerging concepts including
mobile computing, cloud computing and virtual law firms before delving
into a discussion on how attorneys are using these cutting edge
technologies to their advantage, while exposing the associated ethical
implications.
