Call for
Nominations
2011
Denison Ray Criminal Defender Awards
The New York State Bar
Association is pleased to call for nominations for the 2011 Denison Ray
Criminal Defender Awards. These awards, named in memory of Denison
Ray, a career legal activist who led legal services programs in New York
and other states, recognize criminal defense attorneys who exemplify the
highest level of professionalism in providing skilled and zealous
representation to indigent clients in criminal proceedings.
Up to two awards will be
presented to staff attorneys employed by a public defender, conflict
defender or non-profit corporation. One award will be presented to
a director of a defender program that serves indigent criminal
defendants.
Individual attorney nominees
will be evaluated based on a variety of criteria, including, but not
limited to, the overall quality of their legal representation and the
nominee's efforts to inspire, mentor and support colleagues. In
addition to being evaluated on these criteria, nominees for the
Director's Award will be assessed on their ability to inspire staff to
provide consistently high quality and zealous representation.
Each award recipient will
receive a plaque, a cash award of $250, and a one-year, free membership
in the New York State Bar Association.
