2008 SLAPI AWARD RECIPIENTS The Association is
pleased to announce that the number of recipients of the Student Loan
Assistance for the Public Interest Grants (SLAPI) has grown from four to
six. These six awards were made possible through the generosity of a
grant from the New York Bar Foundation and donations made by
several SLAPI was created in 2002 by the House of Delegates of the New York State Bar Association to provide financial assistance to lawyers meeting specified eligibility criteria, including qualifying employment and salary limitations. Recipients are required to be employed a minimum of 35 hours per week in New York State at an organization providing civil, criminal or child welfare/juvenile justice legal services to low income persons; or by a federal, state or local government agency; or other similar organization. The 2008 SLAPI recipients are: Mary Lynn Frey, New York Police City Department - Advocate’s Office - Attorney – responsible for investigating and prosecuting cases of alleged excessive force, abuse of authority, discourtesy or obscenity committed by members of the force against civilians. Glinnesa Galliard*, Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York – Equal Justice Works Fellow- developed a mortgage foreclosure program at LASNNY where she works on the front lines helping low income people either keep their homes or find alternative affordable living arrangements. Holly B. Graham, Bronx Legal Aid Society – Staff Attorney Juvenile Rights Division where she represents children who are the subject of abuse, neglect, persons in need of supervision, and delinquency petitions filed in NYC Family Court. Corrine Lundstrum, Center for Family Representation, Inc. - Senior Staff Attorney representing low-income parents in abuse and neglect proceedings in Manhattan Family Court. Christopher Nelson, NYC Administration for Children’s Services – Supervising Attorney responsible for prosecuting cases of alleged child abuse and neglect on behalf of the Commissioner of the NYC Department of Social Services. Lincy Thomas*, Capital District Center for Independence, a not-for-profit advocacy organization serving the needs of indigent individuals with disabilities – Staff Attorney representing clients in administrative hearings challenging the denial of Social Security Disability/Income benefits. * Asterisk denotes the newest grant recipients.
