Attorney Advertising Regulations as of February 1, 2007

The New York State Unified Court System has new attorney advertising regulations, which went into effect February 1, 2007.  As a service to our members, we have compiled a brief summary of the most significant changes, as well as a redlined version of the regulations, indicating how the amendments have changed the Code of Responsibility. The Bar Association is grateful to the presiding justices of the Appellate Division for their collaboration throughout this process.  When the draft regulations were first announced, we took the concerns of our membership to the presiding justices, who were open and available to meet with us.  As a result of this mutual effort, many of our concerns have been remedied.  The new regulations will curb some of the more blatant abuses that have occurred within the area of lawyer advertising without disturbing lawyers’ right to advertise their services.
