Frequently Asked Questions About the New York State Bar Association

Please Note: The New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) is the oldest and largest voluntary state bar association in the nation, and is a separate entity from the licensing body for New York – the NYS Office of Court Administration (OCA). Unlike some other states, New York does not have an integrated bar.

Bar Exam and Admission Q: Who administers the New York State Bar Exam and determines attorney reciprocity? A: The New York State Board of Law Examiners does both. You can contact them at 518.452.8700, www.nybarexam.org
Attorney Search & Verification / Certificates of Good Standing Q: Can the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) verify whether or not an attorney is a member of the New York Bar in good standing? A: No. The NYSBA is not the official New York Bar and is not responsible for attorney licenses or registration. Please contact the NYS Office of Court Administration (OCA), the official licensing/registration unit: 212.428.2800, www.nycourts.gov
  Q: Can I run a search on the NYSBA Web site for a New York attorney that I am trying to locate? A: No. You can however search for an attorney at the NYS Office of Court Administration’s (OCA) Web site: www.nycourts.gov
  Q: How does a licensed attorney obtain a Certificate of Good Standing? A: Letters or Certificates of Good Standing can be obtained from the Appellate Department where the attorney was admitted to practice.

For the 1st Department (Manhattan) call 212.340.0400. For the 2nd Department (Brooklyn) call 718.875.1300. For the 3rd Department (Albany) call 518.471.4777. For the 4th Department (Rochester) call 585.530.3100. If you do not know which Appellate Division the attorney was admitted in, you may obtain this information from the NYS Unified Court System’s Web site: www.nycourts.gov

Attorney Registration (Licensing) & Identification
Q: Does membership in the NYSBA entitle an attorney to practice in New York? A: No. The NYSBA is not the official New York Bar and is not responsible for attorney licenses or registration. Please contact the NYS Office of Court Administration (OCA), the official licensing/registration unit: 212.428.2800, www.nycourts.gov
  Q: Does the licensing body, the NYS Office of Court Administration (OCA), administer bar cards? A: No. Upon admission to the bar, the Appellate Division does not furnish an ID card, nor does New York have bar numbers. However, Secure Pass ID card applications can be picked up at any New York state courthouse and are available to any attorney in order to gain access into New York courthouses.
  Q: As a licensed attorney, how often do I have to pay my NYSBA Membership dues versus my licensing fees? A: NYSBA membership dues are voluntary and are paid annually. Licensing fees with the NYS Office of Court Administration (OCA) are mandatory and are paid biennially by all attorneys engaged in the active practice of law. For information regarding NYSBA membership dues, call 518.487.5577. For information regarding OCA licensing fees, call 212.428.2800.
NYSBA Insurance Benefits, Receipts & ID Cards
Q: Does the NYSBA offer any insurance plans for its members? A: Yes. The NYSBA offers many insurance plans, including professional liability, malpractice, auto, and homeowners. Contact USI Affinity at 800.727.7770 for professional liability, malpractice and a variety of other insurance plans. Contact Liberty Mutual at 800.987.9350 for auto and homeowners plans.
  Q: Can I obtain a receipt for recent payment of NYSBA Membership dues? A: Certainly. Simply e-mail your request to membership@nysba.org, or call NYSBA Membership Services at 518.487.5577.
  Q: As either a new or renewing NYSBA member, when will I receive my new/updated membership ID card? A: Your NYSBA membership identification card will be mailed to you within approximately six to eight weeks of either joining or renewing. You may contact NYSBA Membership Services if you’d like to check on the status of your card: membership@nysba.org, 518.487.5577.
