Mock Election

The Youth Leadership Initiative is a nonprofit organization based at the University of Virginia Center for Politics that specializes in offering civics educators free materials via our website, www.youthleadership.net. We have a growing online database that currently houses over 70 civics-related lesson plans. To all newly registered teachers, we offer a campaign simulation CD-ROM called “A More Perfect Union” in which students run a fictitious senate race. In the spring we hold an interactive congressional simulation called e-Congress which allows students to draft legislative bills and review bills from other students throughout the country. Perhaps one of our favorite programs is the YLI Mock Election.

The YLI Mock Election is the largest student-only online mock election in the nation. For two weeks each fall, students can cast votes for all federal races approved by their state’s board of elections. Each ballot is tailored to the student’s congressional district. In addition to voting and results reporting, YLI can offer partnering states the following:

  • Accommodating Two-week Voting Period

The 2008 YLI Mock Election will run from Monday, October 20 through Friday, October 31. This will allow teachers with busy schedules to still get in on the fun!

  • Free Goodies for Students

YLI will offer exciting “Mock Election Tookits” to the first 5,000 teachers who request them this fall. Toolkits include stickers, beads, and temporary tattoos for students to receive after they vote!

  • Easy-to-use Teacher Resource Guide

The 2008 YLI Mock Election User’s Guide offers teachers an easy how-to resource to take them all the way through the mock election. It also offers handy tips on making the most of the YLI Mock Election.

  • Lesson Plans

YLI will offer all registered educators an interactive lesson plans comparing the candidates for president. Also, if your state has a gubernatorial race, YLI will create a lesson plan comparing your state’s candidates for governor.

  • Available YLI staff

YLI staff members are just a phone call away from 9-5 EST Monday through Friday to assist any educators who may need extra assistance. We also return missed calls and answer emails promptly. We want this to be a great experience for all involved!

  • School, State, and National Results

Beginning the Monday after the Mock Election closes, educators can view the results of their school’s voting. In addition, the general public can view the results for each state as well as the national results.
