May 1, 2008  "The Rule of Law"

The New York State Bar Association’s Law, Youth and Citizenship (LYC) Program will celebrate this year’s American Bar Association Law Day, offering a variety of resources for teachers, schools and the general public. The theme for 2008, the 50th anniversary of Law Day, is “The Rule of Law.” For more information on Law Day, contact lyc@nysba.org

NYSBA and LYC’s Law Day partnership includes the New York Newspaper Publishers Association’s Newspaper in Education Program. Newspapers across the state are publishing a five-part series highlighting this year’s theme, “The Rule of Law.” Each part in the series focuses on a significant Supreme Court case that originated in New York State and includes a classroom activity. See link below. The New York State Dept. of Education has also put together a Law Day Toolkit for teachers.

Teachers: FREE Rule of Law rulers for your class!! Take five minutes and fill out our Law Day survey and receive your rulers. Click here to be directed to our Zoomerang survey for teachers.

State Court Watch, a project of the Law, Youth and Citizenship Program of the New York State Bar Association. This website is a resource for teachers and students interested in enhancing Social Studies curricula by making connections between state case law, famous U.S. Supreme Court cases, and topics covered in U.S. Government and citizenship classes. These connections make real the concepts of federalism and separation of powers that are important components of U.S. government at all levels of instruction.

Brown v. Board website is the result of a project in 2005, sponsored by the New York State Bar Association and minority Bar associations, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education decision.
To encourage study of this important decision, the Law, Youth and Citizenship Program of NYSBA undertook the development of this website based on the decision, in partnership with the Youth Outreach Committee of the New York State Bar Association and several dedicated consultant teachers, to help bring the case to middle and high school students through dynamic lesson plans incorporating primary documents and the 2005 commemoration testimony. The site is a wealth of standard-aligned lesson plans and primary source documents for middle and high school levels.

Fifty years ago President Eisenhower proclaimed the first Law Day a "day of national dedication to the principle of government under law." The ABA invites you to celebrate this enduring principle during the 50th anniversary of Law Day. Law Day 2008 will explore the meaning of the rule of law, fostering public understanding of the rule of law through discussion of its role in a free society.
