May 1, 2008 "The Rule of Law"
The New York State Bar Association’s Law, Youth and
Citizenship (LYC) Program will celebrate this year’s American Bar
Association Law Day, offering a variety of resources for teachers,
schools and the general public. The theme for 2008, the 50th
anniversary of Law Day, is “The Rule of Law.” For more

NYSBA and LYC’s Law Day partnership includes the New York
Newspaper Publishers Association’s Newspaper in Education Program.
Newspapers across the state are publishing a five-part series
highlighting this year’s theme, “The Rule of Law.”
Each part in the series focuses on a significant Supreme Court case that
originated in New York State and includes a classroom
activity. See link below. The New York State Dept. of Education has also
put together a Law Day Toolkit
for teachers.

The Law, Youth and Citizenship (LYC) Program
promotes civics and law-related education in schools throughout New York
State. LYC assists educators in creating opportunities for students to
become effective citizens able to participate fully in our democratic
society.

State Court Watch, a project of the Law, Youth and
Citizenship Program of the New York State Bar Association. This website
is a resource for teachers and students interested in enhancing Social
Studies curricula by making connections between state case law, famous
U.S. Supreme Court cases, and topics covered in U.S. Government and
citizenship classes. These connections make real the concepts of
federalism and separation of powers that are important components of
U.S. government at all levels of instruction.

Brown v. Board website is the result of a project in
2005, sponsored by the New York State Bar Association and minority Bar
associations, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Brown v. Board
of Education decision.
To encourage study of this important decision, the Law, Youth and
Citizenship Program of NYSBA undertook the development of this website
based on the decision, in partnership with the Youth Outreach Committee
of the New York State Bar Association and several dedicated consultant
teachers, to help bring the case to middle and high school students
through dynamic lesson plans incorporating primary documents and the
2005 commemoration testimony. The site is a wealth of standard-aligned
lesson plans and primary source documents for middle and high school
levels.

The We the People programs are sponsored nationally
by the Center for Civic Education and in New York State by the LYC
Program. The programs are intended to improve knowledge, skills and
civic attitudes in our representative democracy. LYC is the New York
State administrator for the Congressionally-funded We the People Program
and Project Citizen Program.

The annual statewide NYSBA High School Mock Trial
Tournament provides students with hands-on opportunities to
further their understanding of the law, court procedures and our legal
system. It is a program of the New York State Bar Association. Case
archives and a downloadable Mock Trial 101 DVD are available.

New York State Consortium for Civic Learning website
presents a preK-12 civics education scope and sequence for New York
State teachers, supervisors, and curriculum developers including the
following components: concepts, content understandings, learning
objectives, knowledge goals, learning skills and civic dispositions. A
wealth of ideas and lesson plans for each level are available, all
linked to state standards.

Fifty years ago President Eisenhower proclaimed the first Law
Day a "day of national dedication to the principle of
government under law." The ABA invites you to celebrate this enduring
principle during the 50th anniversary of Law Day. Law Day 2008 will
explore the meaning of the rule of law, fostering public understanding
of the rule of law through discussion of its role in a free society.
