Lawyer in the Classroom
The Lawyer in the Classroom Program was established in
1976 to provide students with an opportunity to interact with volunteer
attorneys in a structured setting. Attorneys work in consultation with
teachers to choose topics and teaching strategies that best suit a
class. LYC provides free resources for use during classroom visits. The
NYS Bar Association’s Lawyer in the Classroom Program is available
to assist teachers with classes in Social Studies, English and Business
Law or to help with Constitution Day (Sept. 17) and Law Day (May 1)
events. We have attorneys that can handle the toughest kindergartener's
question to the sophisticated question of an AP government student.
The Law, Youth and Citizenship Program's
knowledgeable staff of educators is ready to assist you in taking
full advantage of such a rewarding and worthwhile program. Volunteer
lawyers are available to help teachers with substantive law issues, as
well as addressing large or small groups on a variety of topics.
The best place to begin to find a lawyer to invite into
your classroom is through your local Bar Association or through your
school attorney. If you need assistance in contacting your local Bar
Association, please email us at lyc@nysba.org. Before making contact,
please have ready the times and days your class meets, your contact
information, a brief description of your class and grade level, and the
topic of discussion. You can download a Request Form using the link
below.
The Law, Youth and Citizenship Program of the New York
State Bar Association is the third largest law-related and civic
education program in the nation. Please visit our website, www.lycny.org, to learn about the many
programs, events and professional development opportunities we
