Mock Trial Aligns with NYS Common Core
The LYC Program provides a variety of ways for teachers to address
the NY Common Core Learning Standards for English Language Arts and
Literacy. LYC's NYS High School Mock Trial Program, sponsored by the New
York State Bar Association and the New York Bar Foundation, has
published that alignment to assist teachers and administrators who need
to demonstrate compliance.
Educators agree that students who participate in Mock Trial enhance the
knowledge, skills and attitudes required to participate as active,
engaged, and informed citizens in our democratic society. As a result of
their participation in Mock Trial, students gain a better understanding
of the United States legal system, the law, the court system, and their
rights and responsibilities as citizens. CLICK

alignment and the Tri-State Collaborative Quality Rubric for Mock
Trial.
Conflict Resolution & US History
Our colleagues at the New Jersey Center for Civic Education
have shared their Conflict Resolution and US History project with us. It
is the legacy of a ten-year grant from the Ford Foundation to see if
integrating conflict resolution skills into the US history curriculum
could help improve students' problem-solving and conflict resolution
skills. With the help of 30 prominent historians, NJCCE turned the
materials into a curriculum for grade 5-12 teachers. CLICK HERE for more
information.

NYSBA Spotlight on Civics
The NYSBA State Bar News devoted much of a recent issue to civics
education. Click here to read the articles.
Subsequent Letters to the Editor regarding those articles can
be read here.
Get ready for Election 2012 and try out the new
iCivics game, Win the White House. Players run for president
from the primaries through Election Day. Win the White House
teaches students about the electoral process, the role of the Electoral
College and the influence of media in shaping public opinion.
Players have to make choices about their party, platform, vice
president, and where to fundraise, poll, and spend their campaign
dollars as they strive for their 270 electoral votes. CLICK HERE to play the
